Addressing the need for better portability and a more sleek design, Dell released its new Vostro line of notebooks: the Vostro 1310, 1510, and 1710. Thinner and lighter than the previous generation of Vostro laptops, these new Vostros come with an array of configuration options, from Windows XP to Vista, an Intel Celeron chipset to a top of the line Core 2 Duo, up to 4 GB of memory, and even business-orientated security options such as fingerprint readers.

The Vostro 1310 in particular is the thinnest and lightest out of any in the Vostro line. With its stylish build, lightweight frame, and a budget price, it appeals to a broad range of consumers, students and small-business users alike. Borrowing some features from its XPS line such as a slot-loading optical drive and touch sensitive multimedia controls, it definitely rivals other notebooks in its class and may just be one of the best price / performance 13.3" notebooks to date.

Excellent review, but what's with this?

It's on every page and it appears to be an ad. So again, I must question the motives of the review. Now, did Dell convince SD to review it, or did SD ask Dell for a promo after selecting it to be reviewed? I hope that the SD staff can see where this might look a bit tricky, and I don't mean to be a troll.

We specifically asked for the 1310 since it is new and we're anticipating some deals on it once it is no longer the new kid on the block. It's also one of the laptops we'll be giving away so having a small banner in exchange is more than a fair trade. We will still run the forums & frontpage like we always have.

nice! nimaim
and vostro 1310 drool it looks like it's fairly lightweight. My Vostro 1500 surely isn't. Although I guess 4.75 lbs is heavy for 13.3"

laptop giveaway!!!!! I can't wait

will yall be giving away the same laptop that you tested? or a beefed up version Drool

That price is out of control $749 for the 4-cell / celeron M / 1GB RAM. Yes, it's not the price that we'll eventually get (this is SD after all.) But, rating it against a 14.1" Vostro Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM for $474, it's hard to justify losing all of that for a 13.3".

It might be better to wait for the Dell E Slims, unless a killer deal comes out...

Thanks for the review, BTW!

Yep you're right. It's definitely not the most cost effective notebook, but you pay more for portability (light weight, smaller screen, etc.) and the fact that it is brand new to the market. It is a very good notebook; however, and when it drops in price, it will be a great buy. The array of configuration options alone makes it worth it.

Yeah, I'm actually in the market for a new notebook for my job, but with the price of this one vs some of the dell deals we've seen, it's not yet worth the money. It should make older models drop a bit which is excellent for the short term, and when it goes down it will be excellent in the long run.

By the by, your review really puts a lot of the features in perspective, so a definite Thanks for that

I'd be in to enter the contest if SD is giving one away.

This Dell 1510 has the desirable features for an "everymans" laptop (everywomans, too?). Solid construction, reasonable weight for travel, DVD read/write, 4 USB ports AND FireWire top the list for me. Lacking is that S-video port which might be needed for certain projection displays, but 99% of the time the external VGA will fill the void. Personal taste makes me want a tiny bit of color, aluminum or chrome flash on the keyboard deck to visually orient where my fingers are. Dells and Lenovos seem to be so "goth dark". But, hey, I'll take function over form any day, and this one sounds like it will get the job done very well.

What use would I put the Vostro 1510 to if I won it? 1) Freedom to move about in my just-installed LinkSys G wireless home environment. 2) Replace both my old Celeron desktop and lovable but aging Dell 800 with fading battery pack and LCD screen hinge on the verge of letting go at any moment. But placed safely on a desk, the 800 is hard to beat with maxed out 2Gb of RAM. Both the Tiger desktop and 800 will be ideal donations to local migrant worker charity if I win the 1510.
