Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is $33.

Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

I've called DirecTV numerous times and each time I seem to get different offers. If you've been with DirecTV for a while, try calling at random times and tell them that you're considering switching and they'll usually give you a list of 3-4 choices. If you get a rep in a bad mood who tells you that there aren't any deals, hang up and try again.

My most recent deal was $5 off my monthly bill for the next 6 months. Not great, but better than nothing and I wasn't interested in a free TIVO offer.

My deal before that was 6 months of any premium package for $12. In other words, buy 1 month, get 5 months free.

I called about a month ago and got $18 a month off for 6 months, plus Showtime & HBO free for 6 months. I think it has a lot to do with what you tell them cable or some other company is offering as to what they offer you. I didn't have to extend my contract either.

As noted in a previous thread Dish Network has a heck of a deal going on: https://slickdeals.net/forums/t140117.html?&highlight=dish+network

I've had DirecTV for about a year and a half and I call every few months to shmooze up the rep and ask what promos are running. I've had free HBO for the entire time and Cinemax, Showtime and starz intermittently throughout. It's definitely worth it to call, ask to be transfered to the customer retention department, be nice, say how much you love your service and ask what promos are running.

To get maximum service, start the cancellation process... They will transfer you to a specialist, and they will do almost anything for you. Remember, you lost your job and dont value tv as much as you used to... Perhaps all you need is basic cable... Wink

Just a side note, but you can just subscrib to one premium channel, and if you see something you want to watch on another channel, just switch your service on the directv website. You can only do this once every 24 hours or something I think, but I've been doing it for about a year and havent had any extra charges. $12 for all the premium channels look around

I haven't posted much, this may have been posted elsewhere, but this may help you if you are in a Comcast area. Comcast is offering $35.00 off their monthly bill for 18 months to satellite subscribers that switch to them. I called Dtv and informed them I would like to cancel. I was immediately transferred to customer retention, and this is what I received:

$150.00 credit
$5 off monthly bill for 12 months
HBO for $2.00 a month for 6 months
Showtime free for 6 months

At first all they offered was a $50.00 credit. I politely informed the rep if you multiply the $35 savings offered by Comcast every month for 18 months, that equals $630. The rep went right to the $150.00 credit and the extra incentives. May have been able to get more, but I felt this was a decent offer they gave me, so didn't feel like arguing the point, especially since I had no intention of cancelling.
