Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is $33.

Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

Anyone got any recommendations of what kinda stuff I can get on my plan?

I've got basic DTV in one room and pay about 4x.xx a month for their 100+ channel package. Don't even know what it is and I've had it for several years.

I wonder what I can get out of them, seems like lots of other members here are getting good deals for around the same price.

Do they still charge $5 a month for extra rooms?

I asked them to match the offer Dish is currently offering and got the following (been a customer 3+ years)

- $5 off per month for 12 months for the Total Choice package
- $2 per month for six months for HBO, Showtime, and TMC (I had only been getting HBO before so this is a $10 savings per month - will cancel Showtime and TMC after the 6 months)
- Free DVR (I got them to waive the $48 they normally charge after rebate for existing customers as well as the $15 S/H fee)
- Only a 1 year commitment versus the standard 2-year they enacted after Aug.1. I told them this was a deal breaker for me if it had to be 2 years

FYI, I did have to ask for the number to cancel in order to get them to offer the DVR for free and the 1 year commitment. I was on the phone for about 35 minutes but it was worth it!

Total savings $60 + $60 +$99 + $15 (saved by not having to buy another universal remote that we were needing anyway)=$234

Total additional cost $5.99/month for TIVO.

BTW, the TIVO (2 tuners) rules!

I called last night to see what Directv was offering. My 1 year agreement w/ them ended this week.

They offered:

$10 off my bill per month for 12 months
Free receiver replacement - for my main receiver (have an old RCA that they don't manufacture anymore)
Free receiver in my bedroom ($5/month extra)

They were also offering Showtime or Starz free for a whole year...

I kept mentioning that Dish was offering 1st month free, 1st 3 months free of Sho, HBO, and Starz, Free DVR, Free 3-4 receivers, etc.

I talked to a few reps before the retention rep was offering all the above and they wouldn't budge on the FAMIR/MIR for the Tivo or DVR. They said they can somehow manage to knock the price down some, but wouldn't waive the MIR.

So what else can I weasel out of them?

And what are the phone options again to get to the Cancellation dept?

I tried to guess where the cancellation department was on the phone tree, but never got them the first time. Just tell the first rep you get a hold of that you want to cancel your service, and they will route you over.

When I called to tell them about the DISH BUY BACK from COMCAST (TELL THEM THIS!!) they gave me one MORE FREE TIVO (on top of the first one I got a year ago) and $15 off for 6 months. The trick is to be out of contract or close to it!! I always call with like 2 months left on my contract. I told them I was going to switch to comcrap but since I LOVE my DTV I wanted to give them a chance to keep me! She then gave me the above listed offer! It works!!! At least for DTV I called COMCAST to try this with my cable modem since they now offer a 8 mb line but would not do anything for me because I get $10 off of my $50 bill. SCREW COMCRAP I will be doing SBC soon! Oh and they relocated my crapy REC. to the garage so I can watch FOOTBALL on sundays with out the wife complaining! Also be aware that it is a 1 YR contact with them to get a free TIVO

Just a side note, but you can just subscrib to one premium channel, and if you see something you want to watch on another channel, just switch your service on the directv website. You can only do this once every 24 hours or something I think, but I've been doing it for about a year and havent had any extra charges. $12 for all the premium channels look around
I don't think it works anymore. I have read on a few Sat sites that they are charging $10 if you change service before 30 days is up. Haven't tried it to be sure, but would suck as I used this method to watch Deadwood this past year and was planning on using it to see Sunday Night Football in HD. Like I said, haven't tried it to be sure.

But when you do any of this, they hook you for another year, right?

I keep getting calls, because I'm out on contract, for free this and free that. They offer a deal to get you back on a contract for another year. I keep saying no, as I'm getting ready to move (and I'm not sure what I will do). I keep saying I want more HD content, and until they provide it, I do not want to commit to staying with DirecTV.

In most cases yes. It is up to the person helping you on the phone to put that in your notes. If you take a Tivo or add an HD receiver/HD-Tivo you are under a 2 year contract. All other regular equipment is a 1 year.

Can call direct to 800-531-5000 and not have to go through all the phone trees. This is direct to Retention department, they can give you the best deals.

If you stick to your guns like I did, you can get them to reduce the contract to 1 year and still get the advanced equipment.

Well I just spoke with DirecTV again trying to finess every little free penny out.

The direct phone number to the cancellation department they gave me was 1-800-824-9081.

They were pretty firm about the 2 yr commitment for Tivo, but as most have pointed out, if I want to accept all those free services, they will let me do that without a commitment.
I'm sure I can call back and tell them my wife demands only 1 yr or we move. laugh out loud

Also they will trade off things like the free 6 months showtime for free 6 months local channels.

They are now hemming and hawing around the free Tivo plus a $100 rebate...so that made it much less interesting offer. Now they state they can credit the $100 on my account for the Tivo, but the MIR would no longer apply. This guy wanted to charge me first, and then wait for my MIR...no way Jose.

Man I already hacked my tivo to 60hr a long time ago, is it worth the 20hr more.... :idontknow

Just called DirecTv, I already have two Tivo's (yes, got the 80 hour free about 10 months ago) so I got the 6 months of Showtime for free and $10 off my bill each month which is great for me... who doesn't need to save more money? Smilie

I was offered the HBO deal for 6 months for $10 off, but that would have cut into the $10 off a month by $2 (yeah, I know peanuts) but we don't have the premium channels now and I don't really see much of anything I want to watch. nod

Well, I didn't really want to push it because I'm still under contract, but, even under contract they gave me
-$10 off for a year
- Starz for $2 for 6 months (I didn't have any movie channels, so added it)

So, even under contract, not too bad... Next I'm going to push to have the extra receiver fees taken off.

I called yesterday to find out about an HD receiver. I have been with them for 10 years and have 3 regular receivers and a TIVO receiver. They offered me the HD receiver $99 after I told them I was considering moving to Time Warner where the HD receiver is free.

This is still not good enough for me - I refuse to pay for the freaking HD receiver - anybody had any luck getting one free or am I just dreaming?
