Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
  • Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
  • 2 months Premium service free
  • 6 months of Showtime free
  • 3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

According to trehutch on 6/19/15, the new number to call is 1-855-407-3110 (now disconnected) and the deal code is GREATDEAL1. Aside from the new number/deal code, my script below should still give you the best chance of getting the best deal. Keep in mind that other than a couple of posters, as of May 27th most people have not been able to get the $200 Visa Gift Card.
-4fit?

4/9/15 per 4fit?

-Call 1-800-531-5000
-Get to retentions department
-Confirm you are in retentions department
-Don't bother with their offers and simply request a cancellation 2 weeks out
-Confirm cancellation date
-Wait to receive "We want you back", "Let us make it right", "blah blah" call or email with special 877-250-4624 number and NEWDEAL1 or NEWDEAL2 code
-If you receive that email, great. Go ahead and call in as soon as you receive it.
-If you DO NOT receive the email in a few days, call the 877-250-4624 number anyway and tell them you received the email
-You may get turned down for "not being in their system" yet
-If that is the case, ask if they can get you added to the system
-No matter what they say, call back in 48 hours or so and try again
-You may still have to haggle with them a bit to get everything listed in this thread ($200 GC, 12 month discounts on package, free 2015 Sunday Ticket Max, 3 months of premium movie channels, all requiring a 12 month commitment (24 months if you elect to receive new equipment)), but they also may just lay it all out there for you from the start
-If all else fails, you can always call the 1-800-531-5000 number back before the date you set and have the cancellation removed and try the whole process again later

well, I called the number in the OP (just the regular customer service number?) and said " cancel service" when prompted.

Got to talk to Ann (very friendly and helpful) and all I have to say is DirecTV just won major brownie points in my book. they are willing to offer a lot to keep you as customer.

My new deal:
- $10 HD access - FREE FOR 12 MONTHS
$65.99 Choice Extra Package - 230 channels (ncludes sports pack)
- $20 OFF for 12 months
- $5 OFF for 24 months
FREE STARZ, SHOWTIME FOR 6 MONTHS (do not have to call to cancel. they will roll off)
FREE HBO 3 MONTHS (call after 3 months to cancel)

FREE 2nd HD DVR RECEIVER (waived the technician charge) - requires you sign a new 2 year contract

$47.99 + $6/month (2nd DVR) = $53.99/month

$250 ONE TIME CREDIT

needless to say, I'm staying! thanks OP and DirecTV

05/07/2012
Customer of 11 years and never late on my bill. My discounts were ending so I called in to see if I can get my discounts renewed since I truly can not afford the regular price and need a discount to stay with them or else I would need to cancel. They said there are no discounts available at this time. I guess I would need to look to the cable company to get a cheaper basic service.

I would not sign up or change a directv package right now. This week they are supposedly coming out with a 5 tuner DVR and I would hate to be stuck with the old tech by signing up or committing to now. HMC has been out since 2011. Post is pointless.

09/25/2012
Customer for 1 year, no late payments. Gave me 1 free HD DVR and 1 HD receiver for $49. Waived the HD service fee for 12 months and gave me $10 off my bill for 12 months.
Made me extend my contract.

10/02/2012directv customer for last 9 years, current bill of approx. $100 per month, do not watch much hbo, etc, or sports. Directv refused to upgrade boxes even though they were broken, without renewal of contract. Got Century link flyer in mail, signed up for 10mbps internet and same number of channels as directv for $96, 1 year contract, getting a $250 amex cad free and a samsung galaxy tablet for free.

10/04/2012DirecTv customer for 14 months (this time, first subscribed about one year after the company started) Called last weekend and I was offered $10 off for (I think) 12 months, 4 months of Showtime and the Red Zone Channel. I was told this was the only offers available at the time. I declined them.

This morning I e-mailed via their website and stated that I'd received a letter from Dish Network (true) and when comparing packages their top tier packages, without premium channels (America's Top 250) found that that package would be $36 less than what I'm paying for the Xtra package from DirecTv. I was sent an e-mail back giving me a phone number and PIN code to call in with.

I just spoke with the rep and she took $15 off for 15 months, $20 off for 12 months and $5 off for 24 months with a one time credit of $25. A total savings (over time) of $610.

She said DirecTv is always willing to work with their customers.

First, I placed a cancellation order, but they wiped my DVR on that date (date of placing the order, not date of future cancellation)... so I terminated that future cancellation order in order to get my DVR stuff back (wife wanted to watch stuff) and never got to hear any "save me" offers - I'll be curious to hear what others say.

You won't get free equipment without a new contract.

I would think your best offer is more credits (more than the $15/month they offered), but lately they've been really cheap with me. All my credits/rebates (except a few) expired 5-6 months ago, I've been out of contract for almost a year, and since getting free Sunday Ticket I can't get any new credits - I've called like 4-5/month some months and no luck.

I love having Direct TV, but I've actually spent the time to research Comcast and Dish this week - DTV just won't cut me a deal anymore.
I would go ahead and move. Come back in a year or two, and they will cut you a deal. The worst thing you can do is let these clowns think you need them or that you don't have the cojones to actually move your business. I, for one, am tired of being treated like I must be an idiot, for being one of their old customers. I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna' take it any more. I was with Cable for over 25 years, and left them when they went up from $99 to over $211 per month for TV Phone and internet. I moved phone and TV and kept internet until they went up to $40 per month on that. Now I don't give them any business at all! But if I do, I will do so only if they give me a new customer deal...

I've been with DTV for like 8 years now.
We currently are OUT of contract for about 9-12 months Smilie

I want some new HD DVR receivers.
We have 4 HD DVR's in the house, with a SWIM system (watch any recorded show anywhere in the house)

GENIE doesnt interest me, as I already have what I need.
What I really want are 4 NEW HD DVR's.
Also with GENIE - if it has 5 tuners, does that mean only 5 thngs can be on at once?
Example - I am recording 4 shows at 1 time, does that mean that only ONE TV can watch live tv & the other 4 have to watch what is being recorded due to the '5 tuners'?
As it is now, I have 2 streams per box (2 x 4 boxes = 8 at a time).....can GENIE do better?

I would gladly sign a new contract for the newest HD DVR boxes, but I dont want to pay for them.
Obiviously I dont need any installation - just send the new boxes, I hook them up and return the HR 21 & HR 22's I currently have.

I was thinking of cancelling & having my girlfriend sign up in her name.....but that would be a last option kind of thing.

Any advice?

The HR34 (AKA Genie) does not limit what your other TUNERS are watching. Assuming you do not have the new set top boxes that do not have a tuner. DO NOT GET THOSE THINGS. If you get non dvr tuners, get H25's. They have their own tuner, and can watch totally independently from the HR34. The HR34 does not even need to be plugged in. It just does not matter.

As far as the non genie DVR's the only one worth considering is the HR24. It is much faster than the older JUNK they still push off on unsuspecting new customers, and the ignorant old customers alike.

I have 1 HR34, 1 HR24, and 2 H25's. The number of tuners respectively is 5 + 2 +1 +1 = 9. This is important since the number of tuners is greater than 8, meaning a standard SWM setup WILL NOT WORK. The tech who installed my setup did not understand this problem, and a second tech later had to install an additional SWM. The chances are your SWM setup will not work if you get an HR34 and 3 HR24's. It would not be a do it yourself project.

If you need to actually use all your programming, then I would suggest you pay extra, and get an HR24 for each setup. The only extra cost is up front, since even the new boxes with NO TUNER AT ALL COST $6 PER MONTH the same as the per month cost of the H25, or the HR24 or for that matter even the monthly cost of the HR34.

I have one of the H25's in the bedroom where it gets limited play, and the other one I use for an additonal PIP feed for my TV which has an HR24 primary feed., I have also used it to feed my computer monitor for multiple football, or basketball games. Also, either H25 can be moved to the guest room if someone is visiting.

The only problem with the Genie fed to one of the H25's is that the control of the picture is sluggish, and not responsive at all. Fast forward is NOT fast. etc.

I would suggest that you cancel your contract, and have your GF get a new account. I do not believe it is possible to get a new customer deal for any old customer. Our account is now in my wifes name, because they would not match a new customer deal for me. It is usually not even close to a new customer deal.

I'm in the same boat. Had Directv for 8 years now and finally just called to cancel for next Saturday as rates have been steadily going up. Customer service transferred me to Retention and it still did not go anywhere.

I went to Costco on Sunday and wanted to know how much if we "transferred" (will have wife sign up). The result:

1) Genie DVR (up to 4 additional TVs included - have 5 though)
2) $30 less than what we are currently paying for a 1 year contract
3) Free 3 month premium channels (hbo, starz, etc)
4) $200 Costco gift card
5) Ultimate package for a year

The only out of pocket I was told would be for the 5th TV. I would have to order a seperate receiver for $70ish which is fine with me as I would be still saving $200+ a year.

So far no call backs. I doubt customer retention can match that anyway. I still use the R type receivers and would really like to upgrade.

Too bad, like some other companies, Directv does not treat it's long time, loyal customers well.

so with this new genie thing, you're able to have your genie/hr34 at your main tv, and you can branch off into four other tvs? assuming nothing is recording, you can have live tv on all five tvs and they could all be on a different channel?

From my understanding that is correct. The rep showed me the Genie/H34 and said each TV would have a "receiver-like device" about the size of a small tablet that you can mount behind the TV or something.

Here is more info on the genie http://www.directv.com/technology/genie

I dunno. You might be right, but nothing I'm reading on there is stating that. All I'm seeing is references to recordings.

It was about 4 weeks. We have excellent over the air local service from the antenna farm located less than 3 miles from my home. Also, we have Roku, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii etc. all of which can receive internet sourced programming.

This is what we ended up with (was out of contract):
$10 off 1 year (HD)
$15 off 1 year (Choice package)
$2 off 1 year
$3 off six months
Another free HD DVR (Lease, of course) (We waived the free install) 24 month agreement, because of equipment.

That is not a slickdeal. It is better than rack rates, but that is not saying much.

i pay 185.00 a month and was promised a genie at half price, after 4 bumbled appointment on their side i cancelled after each appointment, the csr kept messing up how they reoffered it until my account was locked for discounts. told me too bad wait 6 months. 6 months passed and i was told sorry can't do anything. Wrote the office of the president and was told, Sorry we can't do anything. all started when one of their installers would not leave until we threatened to call the police.
Scheduling a FIOS install and they can take their crap away, customer since 1996 no contract, even though they say i have one because of protection plan replacement. they really can't do anything right...
oh well...see ya directv
if you cancel will they usually offer you something before you send back the equipment?
all i wanted was that stupid genie...
