Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".
I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.
Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.
Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
- Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
- 2 months Premium service free
- 6 months of Showtime free
- 3 months of Starz free
Hmmm....decisions, decisions.
Good luck!

Two weeks ago I called and disconnected immediately (we are in the midst of a move), and they really didn't give any pushback other than reminding me of the early term fee, which I said I would eat. So two weeks pass and I still haven't received my kits to return my receivers, and I call them back to ask where the kits are. At that point, the rep politely asks why I disconnected, noted that I had been with them for 18 years and started the offers.
Long story short, they restarted me with the new subscriber offer (e.g. XTRA for 39.99/month for a year and then 10/month off in years 2 and 3, free Genie upgrade, free NFL ticket for the '13 season, free Sports Pak for 3 months, free HBO, et al. for 3 months, and after I asked about AAA (which he couldn't do since I really wasn't new) he threw in another 5/month off for a year. And this was all simply because I actually terminated and was waiting for the return kits. Oh, and of course he zero-balanced my account on the "early term fee."
Something to consider, especially since the conventional wisdom is that current customers don't get treated as well as new customers. In my case, I can't say that was true.
If all you want is a "DEAL", then you will need to cancel your service, and at that time, Retentions will offer you a deal. If that "DEAL" is not acceptable to you, and If it is anything less than the New Customer deal (excluding AAA, Costco, and RAF) then you will need to make good on your bluff to cancel your service. If you set up the cancellation date for a week or so ahead, you MAY get some better offers by phone, so be sure to answer the odd ball calls on your caller id during this period.
Keep in mind that if you take a "DEAL" you may or may not be obligated to a new 24 month contract. If you want any new equipment, then you will almost certainly be required to renew the contract.
Now, if you are still not a happy camper, you will need to cancel your service, and send the equipment back to Directv. During this time, if not before, you may get phone calls from the Directv marketing group, so once again be sure to answer the odd ball calls on your caller id. The marketing folks will probably be able to offer you New Equipment, the same monthly $ cost, and freebies (NFL Sunday Ticket, Premium Channels for 90 days, etc.) as the New Customer deal. Note that you will not get Costco, AAA nor the RAF.
As always, with Directv, YMMV.
This is just one of many subjects I now listen to on the "best Podcast in the Universe [noagendashow.com]". There is so much more than "the usual" programs available thru cable or sats it will blow your mind. Too bad you couldn't just buy ala cart the sports you want when you want.

After swapping cables, etc. and determining that the problem was indeed the DVR and not my TV or cables, I called DTV, and they sent me a new (refurb, of course), DVR, waived the shipping (I asked), gave me credit for no HD for the last weeks ($30), and told me to junk the old DVR--I just have to send back the card. I had an HR20, and they sent me an HR21. We waited for a a few weeks, since we wanted to watch what we had recorded, first
That's about it for credits, for me, til around August, when it will be time to get free NFL ticket, etc. again

With new Genie installs, DTV is pushing ignorant tunerless boxes, but, I believe you can demand H25's which have a tuner. Also, you should demand RF capable remote control units. If you don't know the difference between tunerless & tuner capable or IR only and IR/RF remote you need to educate yourself BEFORE you call the Directv LANDSHARKS and place your order!
Sources: DirecTV will acquire Hulu by month's end
Several sources with knowledge of the ongoing Hulu acquisition talks tell PandoDaily that a deal is imminent and that DirecTV is the likely victor. The acquisition price will be written with a "B," according to our sources, but just barely.

Is it worth getting and is DirecTV providing it for free if you threaten to cancel (like ST and other services)?
