Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".
I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.
Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.
Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
- Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
- 2 months Premium service free
- 6 months of Showtime free
- 3 months of Starz free
Hmmm....decisions, decisions.
Good luck!

U300 + HD + 18.0 MBPS internet + Phone for $120 per month locked for 2 years.
I told them I'd stay with them if they can drop my DTV from bill from $200 to around $100 per month.
The person tried very hard and issued me numerous credits for 2 years to bring my month bill down to $140 plus the NFL package. Guess I'll stick with DTV for another 12-24 until these credits expire.
I know the AT&T triple play deal is cheaper and offers a $525 cash back but if I add 4 receivers (extra $28), all the movie channels (around $50), and Chinese package (another $15) ... it'll be over $190 per month with AT&T, plus AT&T rep said they will only give each house 1 shared DVR. I prefer each room has their own DVR.(I have 5 DVR for a total of 500GB + of HD space).
Posting this in case people need to call DTV to try to get their bill reduced .. use the AT&T offer to as an excuse.
I have always declined when they say do you want a new receiver.

What if I sign a 2 year contract with Direct TV and at some point during the contract I have to move which is beyond my control. What happens then? That's why I'm always afraid to go with Direct TV. I never know if I might have to move without fulfilling the whole 2 years.

What if I just decide to move to another city within my state and when I move I don't need Direct TV. Can I still break the contract and not have to pay?

So if I got Direct TV and ended up moving 200 miles away where they also have Direct TV but I was moving in with another person that had cable. I would have to pay to get out of my contract even though I didn't need it anymore and where I lived supplied me with cable TV instead out of no fault of my own.
So If I had 9 months left on my contract, I'd have to pay each of the 9 months?
If so, then that is scary for me and why I don't bother with it even though I'm sure it would be a better deal than what I have with cable. I just can't predict 2 years out and where I will be.
Uhh, so when I moved from my one apartment to my current one where the landlord didn't allow us to install Directv, I could have nixed my contract?

Someone posted that Directv was billing for equipment destroyed in a fire in Colorado. I know for a fact that my family lost all their directv equipment in a tornado in 2008, and paid nothing for the equipment. Of course, they were new to directv at the time, and as soon as they got resettled, they had directv reinstall and they continued the contract with a 2 month break in service.
My family foolishly had no insurance for any of their losses, and I would guess that the Colorado Fire victims had insurance. Don't know!

I am 22 months into my 24 month contract (fairly new customer). My intention was to cancel the current service and put it in the name of another household member. I described my situation to the retention rep about how I'd like to get the new customer pricing. Here is what I ended up with:
Before calling:
Xtra package, 1 HD-DVR with whole house service, and 1 HD box
Monthly bill: $69.75
Retention offer:
$100 visa gift card
six months STARZ
three months Showtime
NFL Sunday Ticket Max
New equipment: Genie with two mini genies (total three boxes)
Monthly bill: $61.99 + tax
In 12 months when the credits expire I'll have to call back and give them a hard time again. I think I made out pretty good.
