Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".
I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.
Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.
Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):
- Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
- 2 months Premium service free
- 6 months of Showtime free
- 3 months of Starz free
Hmmm....decisions, decisions.
Good luck!

My girlfriend and I are moving from our apartment into a new home. Unfortunately, I had moved into this apartment one calendar year ago, so DirecTV wanted $180 as a mover's fee to relocate me.
I asked how much it would cost to cancel with 7 months remaining on my contract, and was told it was $140. No brainer, especially since all of our service is pretty much off "special rates" by now (ie no more free Sunday Ticket, higher monthly rates in the second year, etc.) - I cancelled for $140 and planned to go with UVerse at my new place.
Fast forward to later in the week, DirecTV starts bombarding me with emails about wanting me back and having great deals. I figured it was a glitch in their system but called anyway.
Long story short, the CSR offered to:
- Waive the $140 early cancellation fee I had paid
- Waive the mover's fee to my new place next month (so I had zero out of pocket expenses for the entire cancellation/re-signup/move)
- Offer me what amounts to my second free year of NFL Sunday Ticket Max
- Offer the first year of service at $30 off, the second year of service at $10 off (so I think the first year is right around $30/month base)
- Free Genie and Genie Light, or whatever it is called
- Free 3 months of HBO
- Free HD service for the first year, I think
All for just another 24-month contract starting from today's date, NOT on top of the original seven months we had left.
I was kind of shocked that all it took was cancelling our service, since I had even asked while trying to cancel if they would offer just to give us a free mover's install costs, and they said no.
Not sure if it will work for everyone, but I believe DTV's 'early cancellation fee' is now $20/month (correct me if I'm wrong, but judging that on what it was going to cost me), so it may make sense for some in a similar situation. Seems like a crazy deal for me, but like I said, possibly a huge YMMV.

Yes, but I've been offered similar deals in the past when I was under contract
btw has anyone else noticed the 3D fad is fading. ESPN quietly dropped their 3D channel and FIFA is likely to cancel their 3D broadcast. Don't worry, that fancy 3D TV is till good for old 2D. That said my next TV will likely be a 4K display.

*BTW Seiki is releasing a 39-inch 4K set before the end of June for $699, with pre-orders at Sears starting on the 27th. The screen probably won't compete with top-tier rivals, but it's hard to disagree with the price -- we're really looking at a regular 1080p, 120Hz TV that happens to handle 4K, even if few can see the extra detail at this size. And don't worry if you think Seiki should be going larger. The company plans to ship a 65-inch 4K set by the fall, which should cover those who equate large resolutions with large screens. http://www.engadget.co
