I bought these 2 years ago, Still works perfectly. in the first year in shutoff/lose connection once in a bluemoon which was a bit annoying. But its great otherwise. I used the second node with backhaul connection and hook up my gaming pc into that node's ethernet. Still better than normal wifi. If you cant access ethernet because youre far in your house this is a good alternative.

I have the same system, and like you, I had problems with it in the first year as Asus worked out all the kinks. Always an issue for early adopters.

Since then, I've had no issues at all. I'd recommend this system if you're looking to expand coverage and get the highest speeds out of the plan you pay for.

I came from an Apple AirPort Extreme, which was about as foolproof of a system as you can get, and to Asus' credit this has been a very easy system to set up and maintain

Aside from the 2.5gbe WAN port and slightly more max speed (?), what's the difference between this and the (2) pack of RT-AX92U (AX6100) for $249 at Amazon?

I believe when used as a mesh system and using a wireless backhaul, you lose Wi-Fi 6 capabilities with the AX92U. It's great as a stand-alone router, but when used as a mesh systems it loses certain capabilities.

Here is a review of the AX92U that lays out its strengths and weaknesses. https://dongknows.com/asus-rt-ax92u-review/

It will not happen, at least until it becomes obsolete.

This is right. If you need Wi-Fi backhaul the AX92U will limit you to WiFi 5 for your clients on the 5GHz-1 radio (WiFi 6 gets used for dedicated backhaul); but the XT8 will still allow WiFi 6 for your clients even when using the WiFi 6 backhaul (although clients connect at a slower speed than the dedicated backhaul).

I bought the AX92U recently because WiFi 5 was plenty fast for the particular use case of a 400 down/60 up fixed wireless connection, with limited LAN needs. And I liked it so much that I bought 4 more units for installs for family members.

In either case, if you are using wired backhaul, the AX92U or XT8 are both going to be plenty fast for most residential use cases.

Edit: One more thing. If you are planning to run Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, the XT8 is already supported in Gnuton's fork. https://github.com/gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng The AX92U is on the roadmap for Gunton's fork. Neither is (and neither is likely to be) supported by the main Asuswrt-Merlin firmware developer. If this paragraph is Greek to you, then you probably don't need Asuswrt-Merlin anyway.

Are these mesh systems best when you do not have an Ethernet backhaul or still a good choice with one? I plan to run Ethernet to each side of my 2 story home that will sit on the 2nd floor near each opposite wall. The house is rectangular but almost square and 2300 sqft.

Currently I have a Ubiquiti AC-Pro access point centrally located on the 2nd floor that is decent but not perfect reception and connected to an Edgerouter.

I'd like to future proof with the latest tech to last another 5+ years. I'm switching soon to Google Fiber's 1Gbps up/down and it's been almost 6 years since I upgraded my equipment. Thanks!

I highly recommend steering clear from this one. Asus has been very lackluster in providing stable firmware releases. I have 4 of these (two pairs), with ethernet backhaul over MoCA. Yet still I've been having issues with wireless stability and clients disconnecting. Usually the outages are ~2-3 minutes, but on the latest version, there was a 30 minute outage. My wired clients had no issues, but wireless has consistently remained a problem.

The good news is that Merlin has released support for this model [github.com] but I have only been running it for a few days, and can't really say that it resolves all of Asus's issues with any confidence just yet. So far, so good, but it's too soon to tell.

I'm well past the return period and held onto these in hopes that Asus would be good about fixing in updates, but over the last year that's proven to be fruitless. Wish I went a different route.

IMO if you already are running an EdgeRouter and a Ubiquiti access point, and plan to run additional Ethernet, I wouldn't go with a mesh system like this. I generally dislike the integrated switch/router/access point boxes, because then you can't upgrade components as needed.

I run Ethernet in my own home and also use an EdgeRouter and Ubiquiti access points (including an AC-Pro). I'm about to upgrade to fiber, and don't see much need to upgrade my access points yet as my bandwidth heavy applications are mostly wired. When I do inevitably upgrade, I'll probably just upgrade to a Ubiquiti WiFi 6 Pro (or whatever the current gen Pro model is whenever I upgrade).

Also you may want to check if that EdgeRouter can handle the full gigabit connection. My EdgeRouter Lite can do ~840 Mbps routing, I think, but if I want to take advantage of more sophisticated firewall features then I need to upgrade to something like a pfsense box or a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro if I want to be able to take full advantage of the gigabit connection. My recollection is that the EdgeRouter Lite sees a huge drop in throughput when you start enabling some of the more heavy-duty security features.
