It might be pure luck
Mine has not unlocked but I am getting free service with the boost coins app and the $15 plan
boost coins is an app, you register and every day, you go on the app
if you are consistent, you can get $1.50 every 7 days alone just by going on the app and watching one video.
if you watch all the videos which might take like 10 minutes per day, you can pretty much get free service via the boost coins.
I haven't paid for service since I am using the boost coins app.
Wait? How can you trade in locked phone to new one?
It doesn't apply though if you are financing at the same operator and trying to trade that in with them - like t-mobile, att will not accept your trade-in if you financed/owe that phone with them and it is not paid/unlocked.
I tried to downgrade my Unlimited plan in the Boost store and online, but I cannot get the $25 plan until my phone is unlocked, and you got to use the iPhone 12 with Boost network for one year to get it unlocked. I am three months in to find out I got nine more months.
Apple.com sells iPhone 12 for $599 + tax.

Service has been fine, but the 5GB on the $15 plan is just a little low for my kid's usage (ran out one month, and will likely run out this month) and it is a hard stop. I asked about upgrading to the $25 plan, but was also shut down.
Worst case scenario, he can go to the Apple store and trade it in for $300 towards an unlocked phone, so no regrets here.
update: different service plan available by following steps members share in the comments.

I'm usually in the iPhone deal threads.
Boost = 1 year
Metro = 6 months (but you can pay for 1 month only, wil autol unlock around the 180th day)
Cricket = 180 days
Total = 1 Month
maybe you got confused. I haven't noticed someone mentioning 1 month for boost.
