I understand that this is high speed, but it's a little uncomfortable when the enclosure, even when discounted, is more expensive than many 2TB drives.

This is the one of the few enclosures with PCIe4 based chipset and 40Gbps speeds that exists on the market right now.

Even PCIe3 enclosures with reasonable thermal management with lower speeds are more expensive than this (>$100)

I guess this is relevant mainly for professional use. Like when you want to do daily backups of a lot of data.
For me a 10GBit/s NVMe SSD enclosure is good enough.

I bought a Thunderbolt enclosure, because Windows won't let you install to a USB drive. There are ways around it, but I didn't want to deal with any future problems. This is a great way to install Windows on an Intel Mac, without losing precious internal drive space. I've also considered doing this on my wife's work laptop to give her a personal environment without the need for a second computer.

I tested this with TB3 and TB4 port laptops. It is very slow at 2700/ 1800MB/s reads/writes compared to Acasis TBU405 which did it at 2700/2700 at much cooler temperatures on all types of thundebolt ports

Sold out anyway. It gets top-of-the-line speeds with M series MacBooks - but it has problems with older Windows laptops / Intel Thunderbolt chipsets.

Now if only I had my own MacBook Pro to support the speeds this enclosure could put out I would fit a Samsung evo drive in it
