There are so many variants, I have no idea what to buy when it comes to Garmin watches
You really have to start with what you want out of one specifically. Then you can start narrowing it down. I mean, there's a chart for comparing just the Fenix 7 line and there are 8 variations just in the Fenix 7 - 7s, 7, and 7X, each with sub variants like solar, sapphire, or solar + sapphire, some of which are stainless steel and some are titanium.

What do you want to use it for?
forerunner is their tri focused series
instinct is for operators, mall ninjas, and hikers
vivoactive and venu/venu sq will do what you want but are more smart watchy than the others. venu sq is the square / iwatch form factor that's popular now.
fenix/epix are the more premium lines
If you just want dip your toes in out I would recommend a ~$100 refurb/used off of fb marketplace/ebay. You can get a garmin venu sq or a forerunner 45 (last gen entry level) or instinct in that price range.
Then figure out what you like and what you think you'd want to pay more for. I personally have no interest in a touch screen garmin but some people can make it work.
This is useful if you want to compare 1-2 models that you've narrowed it down to. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/produ...calculator
dc rainmaker, desfit and gplama do alot of reviews on these devices.
I've had a Forerunner 945 since the Fall of 2019 and still love it. It's a Fenix 6 in a plastic body instead of metal. 300 bucks is a decent price for it. It's still supported by Garmin but do realize they're up to the 965 now and it is a 4ish year old watch, so it's time may be limited.
I agree with previous posters regarding the the variety of watches. For Forerunners in particular, the lower the model number, the more basic it is. The higher the number, the more features you get.
