My Aerostich back protector was just a sheet of some kind of closed-cell foam (feels like neoprene sponge) with a sheet of what feels like Lexan (polycarbonate) over it. Not even stuck together, both were just slid into the back protector sleeve. It actually worked amazingly well and protected my back when I landed on the hood of a San Francisco taxi.
Anything is better than nothing, and an awful lot of the techno-looking name-brand stuff isn't really that well designed or effective.

I'll figure something out when it arrives. If the Rev'It branded back armor wasn't $65 and wasn't annoyingly sized 1-6 versus the jacket S/M/L/XL sizing, I would have just impulse bought that. But since this isn't my primary gear, and I haven't even tried it on, I think I'll wait.
But worse case, I'll probably still cut a pad. Probably not the best solution, but any protection is better than no protection.
I also had their armored pants on.
Both helped im sure, but I gotta thank God on this one. Only one bone broke in that crash that should have killed me. Good thing I had my camera running too. As they say, camera man never dies.
