A reminder that you do not need Premium for Schedule C / Self Employed. All of the forms, and interview questions, that you need are included in Deluxe. The comparisons of what features are included in Deluxe vs. Premium are misleading. I've been using H&R Block Deluxe for over 5 years and I file a Schedule C / Self Employed.

Second the above.
Careful on what version you buy!
The below only applies to the Download and Retail versions (both the "Digital Download" and the "Key Card" are the same version and both must be downloaded, the only difference is the delivery method of the product key).

The Block Online packages of the same name have limited forms compared to the download version. Online of the same name is a rip-off.

There is much intentionally created confusion about versions as to what does what and I thought I'd post this to try to clear things up. Many believe that you need Premium or better if you are self-employed or have rental income. That is not true. Self employment income and even LLCs along with rental income can be done with Deluxe or Basic. If you get to, corporations, Scorps and Partnerships you will need higher true business/corporate versions

Many mistakenly believe based on the charts and wording that Block puts out that you need Premium for things such as Schedule C, D & E. Deluxe handles all those forms but if you go by a chart or version picker on Block's site you will be guided to the higher version.

Block likes to upsell you on the versions and there are almost outright deceptive marketing, wording and charts that cause much confusion about what version does what. Deluxe or even Basic will do the vast majority of returns even quite complicated ones. They all support the same forms. The only difference is in the amount of guidance and extra features you get.

Note: H&R Block charges an additional $20 for state e-file. However many states have their own free online e-file through the dept of revenue: https://thefinancebuff.com/free-e...irect.html

I used TurboTax for a few years before I switched.. the price difference was a huge reason.. I've now used HR block for the past 2-3 years. I'm good with the experience and will continue to use them. Turbotax software UI/experience is probably slightly better but not enough to charge that much more
Back in early 2000s, I used to get BOTH for FAR. I compared them both for years. Several years later, once we needed to pay for them (no longer FAR), I still shared with family where one person would buy Turbotax and the other H&R. Still kept on comparing. Always identical results.

When TurboTax added Spyware to their s/w, we stopped buying and have never looked back. We all now exclusively use H&R Block. It was just TaxCut before and then H&R bought them out.

The state eFile fee till last year was $19.99. Not sure what it is this year though.
I've always used TurboTax, but at a little more than half the price, I'm considering trying out H&R Block. Any input from those who have used both? Also, what is the State e-file fee from H&R Block?
