For those of you wondering about how the trade is credited (to your account or to your original form of payment) the answer is here https://www.spectrum.net/support/...ogram-faqs in Spectrum's FAQs.

It states: " How do I get my trade-in payment?
After your device is processed, you'll receive a credit for the assessed value. If you've paid for your new device in full, the trade-in credit will be refunded to your credit card within two billing cycles. Otherwise, a monthly credit will be applied to your Device Payment Plan in equal parts over the duration of the plan, starting within two billing cycles.
Additional details will be provided in your trade-in email from Assurant."

If your device is paid in full it is supposed to go back to your credit card. I have done 4 of these and on all 4 they credited my Spectrum account, however each time a very short phone call with CS resulted in the credit going to my CC.

If you need a $40 trade-in phone for this deal:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Straig...2435291724

If above phone not available, here is a $50 phone for trade-in deal:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tracfo.../456429801

WARNING
Make sure to turn it on and see if your phone can activate. Walmart is not properly scanning these phones and trade ins are getting denied because of anti-theft. Buy these phones in store if you can! try to activate online and if error take the whole phone box package to store and have them rescan and reissue back to you or get replacement. check to make sure IMEI of "new" device can be activated online before you leave store

if above can't fix your problem then do the following:

1. Reach out to straight talk CS and ask them to escalate with issuing ticket
2. They will tell you to do the following: Email [email protected] with name, contact number, ticket number (this is created by chat agent) and attach receipt proof and picture of IMEI (I took a picture of the card that has the IMEI and sim card number on it).
3. You should get email about 24-48 hours later that it can now be activated
4. If they ask you to activate with phone plan then buy this $15 plan and give them the PIN and other relevant information they ask for

https://www.target.com/p/tracfone...A-87908383

Takes roughly 15 minutes to come in after purchase to hit email.

5. If they didn't ask to activate on tracfone then visit https://www.straighttalk.com/acti...ng.phoneno and see if you can activate phone (no IMEI error)

6. Insert sim if not already in, turn off phone and turn back on. Make a test call. If call won't go through wait 5 minutes. You'll probably get some texts from Tracfone and calling should work. They suggest to turn off and on again if not, but I didn't need to.

$25 at Amazon: (slow shipping)
https://www.amazon.com/TracFone-M...B0C7LNLS9P

Store trade-in is YMMV
  • Most stores will uphold the promotion - if not, go to a different store
  • Device usually needs to be in stock - some stores will ship if not in stock
  • Stock is usually low and sells out fast - may need to try more than once
  • Higher storage options are usually not available in stores - only online
  • Tax is dependent on state - some charge MSRP, some charge discounted price
  • Doing too many trade in in short amount of time might get your account flagged - only online is available then

I do not recommend Spectrum Mobile. They are an MVNO on Verizon towers and when the network is congested, you have little to no connection because your priority is so low. There is also no upgrade option for a prioritized connection. I dropped them after 1 month.
I test with the following tiv samsung phones:

A14 $714
A54 $770
S23fe $880
S23+ $994
Trade in my Google Pixel 6A for $757 that I originally got from metro for $50 years ago. Makes this a true slickdeal 🫡

Pro tip: Once the phone is unlocked, use patcheD Odin to convert it to retail US firmware (U to U1). Helps get rid of Spectrum bootlogo and some bloatware. OTA will work and you will get quicker updates.

Here are the instructions in detail:

0. Phone will be factory reset so take a backup of your files before starting! Install required android drivers (google it)
MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS UNLOCKED & LOGGED OUT OF SAMSUNG / GOOGLE ACCOUNT just in case.

1. Go to this link and download the latest "patcheD" version of ODIN
https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/

2. Go to link below (samfw.com >choose device but add 1 after the U (U becomes U1) > choose "XAA" as CSC > download the latest firmware available (about 10gb) or just click link below and download latest version
https://samfw.com/firmware/SM-S921U1/XAA

3. Extract above file using 7zip or similar tool

4. Run the patcheD Odin you downloaded in step 1 and it will show you the instructions on how to flash (you basically choose the downloaded files within patcheD Odin). Everything is explained within patcheD Odin (Tip: choose CSC instead of home CSC)

5. Let it process and reboot.

That's it. Enjoy!

If this is all done through third-party sites (non-samsung sites) is there any way to verify the authenticity of this firmware? How can somebody be confident that they are actually altering their device with official firmware?

Also, does doing so void the warranty or authenticity of the device if you change their firmware from U to U1 using third-party tools?

You should be able to get it unlocked as long as connected to internet and other unlocking requirements met.

Well, you need to do your own research or whatever you're comfortable doing with your phones. Samfw.com is well known in the community just like ipsw.me they pull the files straight from Samsung's server. You cannot flash non official files without unlocking boot loader which is next to impossible with NA variants & it would also trip KNOX on Samsung phones.
Converting U to U1 has been a known thing for several generations (just google for S22 or S23 and you can find more info)

Here's an alternate open source tool to download the firmware directly from Samsung:
https://github.com/SlackingVetera...a/releases

I'm not sure about the warranty though.

Personal experience? I asked customer care and lady said it has to be inside US to be unlocked . But she was not 100% sure about it. Said you can give a try while being abroad but if it doesn't work u need to try unlocking here when you are back

Okay thanks. I know there is a whole world of people who like to mess with stuff like that I am just wondering if for they everyday cell phone user it is worth messing around with stuff like that just to get rid of the Spectrum screen. A lot of sensitive information involved with cell phones so just want to make sure that the device is not being compromised or potentially screw up things like the warranty. I think I would be less concerned if it was tools and firmware you could directly download from Samsung.

Had it been Motorola, I wouldn't recommend it to a regular user since changing software channel breaks OTA updates but with Samsung everything is intact.
Also, Samsung has pretty much made it impossible to flash any non official / modded firmwares. All we're doing here is flashing the firmware of a different variant of the same phone. Odin is an official Samsung engineering tool which got leaked and patched to help flash firmwares of different variant. It won't let you flash wrong or modified firmwares since the phone rejects it. I see no harm with the conversion especially knowing several of us have been doing it for a couple of years without issues. Only concern is where you download patcheD Odin from since there are fakes going around hence I linked to the XDA thread which is trustworthy
