Masks reduce exposure to the virus by trapping them within the filter media.

Most viruses expelled are water born, so as a droplets, bigger than the filter material.holes, and will get trapped.

A single covid virus is Smaller than the holes in the filter materials and can pass through...assuming they navigate the meandering path from front to back of the mask material without getting teams trapped.

Leaks around the edge of masks also let in covid unfiltered.

....

Better masks trap more, so reduces the amount of virus you'll breathe. But over time, more and more exposure to the virus means one eventually gets thru your body's defenses, infect you.

Yes, as long as you are not exposed to Covid 19. It will also keep you safe from rhino attacks.

How large is large on these really? Thinking it may be too big for face.

Also, other than a slightly higher rating on these - any reason to get one of these vs this HB freight one if i just need it to cut Rockwool and spray paint a basement ceiling: https://www.harborfreight.com/p95...67727.html ?
I don't recall seeing dimensions on this but maybe I'll find something and post it. There's a 3m site page for the series-ish model. But facial fit dimensions are kind of tricky to gauge anyway given complex shapes of nasal, cheek, chin area, etc.

My suggestion is if you think you've got a significantly larger than medium face, buy it, try it with a fit check, if it works, great, if it is too large, keep it anyway, order a medium (which you can get for less than the full kit price maybe if you get one without included filters?), use this one for the filters or an extra pair of filters (which you'll eventually need, right?) and then you'll have one that fits, another to give away or keep around if you do team work and someone helping may need one, and you've got basically a free respirator mask for what you'd have paid MSRP for the filters alone anyway.

This fits my partner and I and we both guessed "large" and were right.

Well it certainly isn't scientific analysis I'd expect from NASA but it's generally true.
Anything that gas or water can pass through is generally porous i.e. has pores = some kinds of holes or permeability that acts like a hole in that some materials can pass passively from one side to the other with a certain degree of flow restriction / pressure head / diffusion rate etc.

Almost no filter is effectively going to keep 100% of something behind it while passing other things through completely freely. There's a trade-off in air (N2, O2) flow and moisture flow (H2O -- your own sweat, exhaled moisture, humid intake air) resistance vs. how well it's going to trap larger molecules and still not have such high breathing resistance that it's a problem. So yeah 97%, 99.x%, whatever of stuff it may filter out but even in the best case there are "holes" or at least bypasses that get through a bit somehow despite being reduced in concentration a lot.

SARS virus travel hitching rides on larger particles, that's how they get around. These respirators absolutely will filter the virus as long as you get a good seal and maintain it

These seem pretty solid / decent IMO based on short term impressions only.
Anyone with significant facial hair that's in the interface zone of the mask to the face should think about removing it or seeing if a different kind of mask / system could work around what you want to keep.

Fit matters though so fit check whatever you get before you rely on it.

There are lots of types of filters / respirators, not all appropriate for all use cases. So use the right PPE for the job.

I think the large size one here should fit most people though some can get near the upper limit of the adjustment range of the "around your head / neck" straps but I suspect overall workable for the vast majority.

There's a moderately significant "new plastic" smell about these IME so you can let them air out for a few days before using them then again that's probably the least of your worries compared to breathing in whatever this thing may be saving you from so I guess it's all relative if you're in a hurry and can't air it out for a few days first.

IIRC they do make a silicone based one if this one bothers some people though being latex free it should be acceptable for most.

I think so. P100 is a higher rating in areas of overlap than N95.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mec...respirator)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIO...ion_rating

Minimum Efficiency Level

N95 Filters at least 95% of airborne particles

N100 Filters at least 99.97% of airborne particles

P100 Filters at least 99.97% of airborne particles

The P-type filters are oil proof in addition to being particle filters whereas N-type are not oil resistant just other particulates.
