It runs on either 2 lanes of gen 5 or 4 lanes of gen 4. The PCIE bus has 16 lanes. GPU's usually require 16 lanes, but SSD's rarely saturate more than 2 lanes, so they usually run on 2 or 4.
I'm not sure why people are upvoting a mid-tier dramless 1tb drive at $75, this is not a good deal. The 990 evo is somewhat slower than the last gen 980 pro (let alone the 990 pro), and while it can use two gen5 pcie lanes as a substitute for four gen4 pcie lanes it is not a "gen 5" ssd.
Here's a review (of the 2tb version): https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-c...ssd-review

While prices for ssds have drastically increased over the past half year, even in the current awful market this is still nowhere near a good price for a drive of this performance tier. If you really feel like massively overpaying for a 1tb drive from amazon (this is not recommended, just as an example of a bad deal that is a far superior value to the one posted), for only $6 more ($81) you can get the 1tb crucial t500 which has dram and blows the 990 evo out of the water, or for $10 more ($85) the 1tb sn850x which is even better. Let me reiterate again, I'm not recommending either of those drives at those prices, but they're a far better value than this "deal". Typically 2tb drives offer a significantly superior value compared to 1tb drives, but even for a 1tb drive the value proposition of the 990 evo at $75 is poor.
Need to see 4TB deals again.

The 990 EVO is better than all of those drives if you want a low heat, high performance option. It is pretty much the best drive you can buy for a laptop or game console where a fat heatsink isn't an option.

And, here is an alternate take:
https://dongknows.com/samsung-990...sd-review/
This drive is bad for heat/efficiency. Read reviews. If you want the best efficiency and lowest heat possible for laptop you need to go PCIe 3.0. You won't see any real world performance difference compared to pci 4/5.

Sweet! Now it's "only" 25% more than some other nvme that you wouldn't notice a speed difference from!

Synthetic stress-test benchmarks don't tell the whole story. This drive performs well for typical consumer usage scenarios (random reads) and operates much cooler on typical consumer workloads than other drives. In fact, Samsung has officially stated that this drive does not require a heatsink and will not throttle with typical workloads; this is not the case for the 990 PRO, SN850X, or T700 which all require fat heatsinks to avoid throttling - especially in enclosed areas like a laptop.

For those who understand its purpose, this will be a very popular drive for areas where a big heatsink is not usable or undesirable - and will offer better performance than a dated PCIe3 SSD.
