Berkey is being sued by the FDA for letting heavy metals come through their filters. Also Berkey REFUSES to have their filters certified. I have a berkey system and had to toss their filters and buy doulton filters for a system like this one. STAY AWAY FROM BERKEY
Friends, this will house most of, if not all of the 7 and 9 inch high quality aftermarket filters.

You buy this as the long term stainless steel base and then buy different filters at the six month mark and onward.

I've been doing this about 5 or 6 years now with good success and clean water.

Decent filters to consider are the "Aquacera 9 Inch CeraMetix" ones sold a few shops online. They are a new knockoff of a very old well-known British douley model and filter a lot out at a decent price point.

Hope this helps someone.
good news: comes with two filters, worth ~$63
bad news: the next two filters will cost you ~$63

Their recommendations are weird too.
They claim they are rated for 3000 gallons each, but say they should be replaced after 6 months.

COULD mean 3000 gallons or 6 months whichever comes first.

Is this just a humongous Brita? Says the filters can crank through 6000 gallons of water before needing to be replaced. Lets do some math!

Brita:
40 gallons per Brita filter @ 3.83 (basic amazon generic price) nets you 0.09575 or ~10 cents a gallon

Purewell:
6000 gallons per Purewell Filter @ 63.00 nets you 0.0105 or ~ 1 cent a gallon.

The frugal will be very pleased.

As for the expiration date... I feel like this is more or less an estimate based on some average rate of consumption. Makes it easy for people to know when they should replace and it makes it opportunistic for companies to sell more filters. I'm not aware of anything in these filters that would expire and just stop filtering.

All those types of filters do this. I don't know why 6 months is the cut-off date for them. Could be real engineer-tested reasons, could be CYA measures.

Could bevtime it takes for non-friendly bacteria to grow.

Not sure... but I know my brita got some funky stuff growing in the cartridge after a while, could taste it. Swap cartridge, back to clean taste.

oh and BTW, good price on this stainless base. I bought one for $100 about 6 months ago and that was by far the cheapest deal at the time. They are all stainless canisters with cheap initial filters.

Since almost all our water supply now had forever chemicals in it, totally recommend it. Only fools still drink water from the tap...

Thanks, this helps finding replacements for my Berkey filters.

Another thing to note on filters. I take them out and scrub them with a green scotchbrite pad every few months. Or when the filtering slows down. Whichever comes first.

No prob friend. Yes some will scrub to increase lifespan. Others it won't matter as much but doesn't hurt to try almost all. Catch you later friend.
