I forgot to add, fallout 4 is getting a free update on April 25th 2024. This update gives it a next gen upgrade for Xbox, so you can do 4K 60fps
If you're on XBOX, Fallout 4 GOTY is probably the best bet since it's the newest version, has a ton of content, and will be the most up to date as far as Quality of Life features go.
Fallout 3 holds a special place in my memory, but it looks very outdated on the box in 2024. If you're on PC, there's an overwhelming number of mods for it, and New Vegas as well.
FO4 will likely be the least jarring graphically. I fizzled out on completing it, but had a great time with the time I spent on it. Managing the settlements can be a bit of a chore, depending on how deep into that you get.
The first time you "whoops, that's a super mutant", or "whoops, that's a death claw" are some great gaming moments.
Don't forget to save your game! Often.
new vegas is by far the best 3d fallout game
edit: don't get me wrong, though. they're all worth playing. new vegas just feels more like the original games than the others do

Not free if you pay for prime.. jfc. You people...
Well for people that pay for prime anyway it's free. I pay for Amazon prime regardless of free games, so it's just a bonus to me. And I know a lot of people are in the same boat as me

Worth mentioning that Fallout 3 only has achievements on console. I bought the steam version a year or two back for Steam Deck and saw that they removed achievements when they removed the Windows Live component.
That's the only reason I've stuck with Xbox, but I'll admit the modded version is so much better in different ways.
The graphics in fallout 3 and new Vegas are just fine in my opinion. It doesn't detract from the story and gameplay. Sure, it's not a 2022 release at 4k60p but it's not 64-bit level either. maybe some of the mechanics differ from each title but don't let that fact keep you from enjoying other wise great games.
lol, you mean 32-bit like an original PlayStation, Nintendo 64, or Sega Saturn? I agree, Fallout 3 and New Vegas have serviceable graphics and long sight distances, modern SSD's are great for reducing loading times.
Honestly, in terms of art style rather than graphics fidelity, I always found the bleak wasteland environment depressing, so I missed the different kinds of vegetation in Skyrim and Oblivion, but the New Vegas cities and vaults did a better job of providing variety and interesting visuals for me than Fallout 3.
The story is really why we play these games though. Interesting dialogue trees, curious quests and characters, multiple ways to resolve conflicts and puzzles. I scoured Fallout 3 to do 100% of the quests, so I needed a long break from open world games after that, but I was really pleased to come back to New Vegas years later.

Fallout 4 GOTY PC edition public service announcement - if you are seeing crashes to desktop early in the game it's likely due to the "Weapon Debris" option being enabled at all on an Nvidia GTX/RTX series card. To disable this open the "Options" menu from the launcher, select advanced and the last drop down box select "Off (best performance)".
Had this issue with both GoG and Steam versions of the game with any combo of add-ons/mods added or removed. This is the only thing that fixed it.
That's great to hear. Never played a Fallout game but have enjoyed the tv series so far but have been hesitant on getting into any of the games assuming the graphics were outdated.
Season 1 was very good, please don't ruin season 2.

Facts. Fallout 4 was just not on the same level in any way. Graphics yes were an improvement. I hated the flight suit armor. Ruined a lot of the charm

Is the update only for Xbox or pc too?
