I forgot to add, fallout 4 is getting a free update on April 25th 2024. This update gives it a next gen upgrade for Xbox, so you can do 4K 60fps
If you're on XBOX, Fallout 4 GOTY is probably the best bet since it's the newest version, has a ton of content, and will be the most up to date as far as Quality of Life features go.
Fallout 3 holds a special place in my memory, but it looks very outdated on the box in 2024. If you're on PC, there's an overwhelming number of mods for it, and New Vegas as well.
FO4 will likely be the least jarring graphically. I fizzled out on completing it, but had a great time with the time I spent on it. Managing the settlements can be a bit of a chore, depending on how deep into that you get.
The first time you "whoops, that's a super mutant", or "whoops, that's a death claw" are some great gaming moments.

new vegas is by far the best 3d fallout game
edit: don't get me wrong, though. they're all worth playing. new vegas just feels more like the original games than the others do

I never played the first 3 games, I started with Fallout 3, but it feels that the OG Fallouts were much darker than New Vegas or any of the others. There is a youtube series I watch that goes over some of the vaults you go into and it gets so freaking dark.
In the tv show when watching the woman give birth to the piranha beasts that immediately turn around and consume her made me think of some of the OG experiences.
If they ever give NV a remaster (and make it work better with current systems without mods) it would be cool if they finish some of the quest lines that just got abandoned.

Good to see MSFT capitalized on people that actually do not play video games by greenlighting the show. I guess the show really has people interested in the lore. I think many will be shocked by the super old game engines these games run on. When they came out, the visuals and animations were pretty good, now.. it's just hard to look at. I'm glad I played these games back in the day.

My first FO was NV about 5-6 years ago and, while it was way outdated, the game/story is so amazing that it didn't bother me. It took a little getting used to the visuals and mechanics at first that said all.
FYI - Fallout New Vegas is broken on PC through gamepass if you have the latest Nvidia or AMD drivers. The game will crash as soon as the opening cinematic ends. Since it's the gamepass version the other 3rd party script extenders to enable stability mods won't work either...

What got abandoned?
Correction: a *current gen* upgrade

So the game will freeze on us at 60fps, wow.
