For car camping, the coleman is better. The ceiling is 8 inches taller, and the sides of the tent are more vertical, so not only do you have more volume in total, you really have much more floorspace.

The only thing I would say is that the "darkroom" thing could be a big deal, depending on where you live. In sunny and warm climate, it helps a lot. If it were me, I would pay a lot more for it, but I camp a lot, and everyone's priorities might be different.

All that said, I can't think of a better car camping tent until you step up to the skylodge darkroom instant tent at about $150. Or the coleman knockoff of the REI kingdom, because that one has a 6' ceiling in a 4p tent, but the footprint is a lot bigger because of the screened porch...

I recently got a kelty wireless 4p for around $100, how would you compare that against the Coleman? Think it's worth returning the kelty for this?

If you want to keep tent darker go to harbor freight and get a big silver tarp to throw over the tents. Doubles to help if it rains. I know someone with the darkened inside tent and it does help but they said the darkened coating is flaking off. Downside is tarp reduces air flow

Gonna be honest and tell you that there is a big red flag for me on that tent. Rei has a handful of reviews about the design of the support pole. Someone mentioned that it is under very high tension, and it appears as though the design of the 4p might not be acceptable. My guess might be that the support pole is too beefy for the shorter 4p span, making for a scenario where it's easily damaged. A bit of a tough design requirement in order to get more headroom, and they went with something akin to the big agnes support pole.

Set it up and check it out yourself, see if you're comfortable with how it goes up. Although it seems like a great deal, it could be a hassle getting a replacement. An interesting option would be to get a fiberglass replacement pole for that span. It could be more durable, offering more flex in that use case.

If I were you, I'd probably return it and get the Coleman just for that reason. If you want to get something a little "better", look for an rei kingdom or Basecamp, used. Just know that they're way bigger when in the bag, and a lot heavier. I know people will say it's "car camping", but I often go out of my midsized car, and with cooler, grill, stuff, sometimes I don't have a whole lot more room to spare on road trips.
I have a Basecamp 6p, and even though it's nice, sometimes I know I'm going to be lazy and take my Coleman 6p for 1-2 nighters because it's way easier to set up (I can put it up myself).

Great point about the airflow. Another one is that you'll have to find a way to tie it down, so it'll increase the number of stakes and guylines you'll need. Then, that increases the footprint, which could pose an issue in some sites, and prevent you from setting up in a spot that might be the most optimal in regards to flat surface (no rocks or roots) and soft ground. Then, you'll likely have some flapping, could be really annoying. Also, you have to buy a tarp.

Personally, I value all those things more than having a dark tent, and probably not one more than the other, that's how important they are to me. If anything, airflow is king.

In the coating... Yeah, that sucks. I don't own one myself, but have been in one. I have too many tents as it is, and I moved on from sleeping in, so I no longer feel the need for the tent to be a place of refuge from the heat and the sun. I also take a sleeping mask in the summer, or a beanie that can go over my eyes in the cold months ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Thanks OP. I am in for 2 tents. My family of 4 wants to go camping more this summer and having a tent for 2 people will work out better than using 1 huge tent or cramming everyone in one of these tents. I also purchased 4 of the Coleman mummy bags that are $21 right now. I can't tell you how happy I am that I won't need to lug our huge 8-10 person tent.

Definitely two 4p tents over one 8p, just like a previous poster did.

Coleman makes a good tent no question. Last year I picked up this 3 person tent for $28., used it along with my canvas tent which daughter, hubby, and two 4yo's stayed in and I stayed in this 3 person tent from Decathlon. It's a great tent. I was really surprised with the build quality and material. It's the same size as the Coleman. I'll grab another for nephew and his wife. http://www.campsaver.com/decathlo...erson.html

I've had 2 Coleman tents and both were great (still use one) and I would say this Decathlon tent is on par. No wrong choice.

Received my 2 tents. Set them up and looked them over. Everything looks great. For $30 these were indeed a slick deal. Thanks again OP.

FYI for those that got this tent and haven't set it up and broke it down make sure to roll up the rain cover and tent together and take your time and keep it as tight as possible.

I used this for a week last year. It was roomy and had plenty of room for a queen inflatable, a small table and a chair. Good tent!
