FYI - I went through the membership signup process a couple of times and ended up with going into limbo both times - costco system hung up. Signed up for a costco account and entered the process and it worked!

Uh-oh, I see that one cannot use a Digital Shop Card at Food Court kiosks.
(I don't like using my Visa only for a $1.50 hot dog & Dew.)

Took the Order Confirmation printout to Costco later in the day on 5/3 and they took a picture of my mug (ugh, and I thought driver license pictures were bad!) and created the membership card.
On 5/8 at 4:21 PM CDT I received the email for the Digital Shop Card. Thus 5/3 afternoon to 5/8 afternoon.
So yes, I went into Costco to "activate" my membership before I received the Digital Shop Card. I have no idea if that is a dependency, versus just ordering. Interesting thought though. But I did not want to wait once I received the Order Confirmation.
(Now here it gets complicated with my mangled memory. I think I was in Costco Thursday afternoon (5/2) where I wandered around for a while. Because there was a grand opening of a Cub grocery store in the same development, so possibly combined stops. Obviously couldn't buy anything, but confirmed things like a (physical) Shop Card can be used at their food kiosks.)
But wait, there's more! After I was "activated" on 5/3 I went literally across the street to Aldi. (Their 2% milk is 50 cents a gallon less than Costco.) The time on the Aldi receipt? 4:41 PM CDT. Hmmmm...
If I just went into Costco to get "activated" then right over to Aldi, that could be twenty minutes. But that seems short to me.
But if I wandered around after getting "activated" and before going to Aldi, way more the twenty minutes. At least an hour or more.
So it would be fascinating if I was "activated" 4:21 PM CDT on 5/3. But no way to prove it. I don't remember the exact time and there is no time, only a date in my membership info.
However, why chance things by waiting to activate? One can always cancel the membership and get a refund.
(While I am posting this, I might as well mention I had no problem converting my Digital Shop Card to a physical Shop Card at Costco. And the physical Shop Card can be used at their gas pumps.)
And I believe you can get a refund if you decide halfway through that you definitely won't make it, just in case.
I have been an executive member for years. I also had their Amex. And now Citi visa. I typically get about $1600 a year between executive and Citi card. I think it's great.
