These are forged and not stamped, so I'd say they're the better of the lower quality line-up. At $80 for 7 knives you can't be expecting handcrafted Damascus steel from Japan.

I'd say it's a decent starter set if you're still cutting raw meat with a stolen steak knife from the campus cafeteria

This is a lower quality line of their knives.

I appreciate the heads up, saves me from having to read more drivel from others that don't have any contribution to make regarding a purchasing decision.

I would recommend getting a knife set with the sharpeners built into the slots on the block. Honing steel is fine but it's a little inconvenient and takes some skill to use properly.

These are Hankles in name only. Performance-wise they are not much different from anything else at this price point. Strike through price and name brand are just for misdirection. Nothing to see here as far as deals go.

Depends on what Chicago knives you're talking about. These are on par with some, and better than others but not drastically so.

Thanks for the reply. It's been at least 12 years since I've had them. I'm not sure how to look up the model type or number. The block is light wood in color and the knives are black handles. In other words, it doesn't look as nice or fancy as these Henkels from Costco.

Same. My knife block has slots for steak knives, and I always forget to grab them because they're not in the drawer. I've had them for 2 years, and for the previous 35 years of my life everywhere I've ever been has had them in the drawer.

Yeah I hated mine when I finally got it. Was so excited to. Felt really hard to put my knife "on" the rack/take it off without risking scratches or nicks on my relatively higher end Shuns. Just... didn't live up to expectations really.

Wrong, Buck cutlery knife set comes with a gorgeous block and knives, where my steak knives (6) are in the block by design. Its made with the same steel the normal Buck knives are made from, but the kit is >$600
