When this router came out, it was bug heaven, until the community ironed things out with merlin. And you always want to buy the most popular asus model, because it has by far the most merlin users fixing bugs. In comparison, the biggest-fastest-routers, king spiders, don't get nearly as much support as the leaner pound for pound champs like the AC86u and AX86u. Go 1 model higher, ac87u, barely anyone bought those.
When we switch to 7 in about 5-10 years, we should probably buy the WIFI7 - 86u.

That said, if you snagged multiple T-Mobile RT-AC68U and use them in a mesh network, they're not bad, but I'm glad I upgraded, even at $200. Those $40-50 T-Mobile RT-AC68U were insanely good at the time and still decent routers if you're not using pushing over 500mpbs internet connections.
Consider this model as EOL product.

I picked up a used AX88u for 169 from Amazon warehouae. Hope it is good.
If you buy a new router, 6e/7 whatever, if it get fixes at all, you're looking at years down the road, and that's only if it's Asus. If you buy tplink, netgear, etc, just don't expect anything good, if said function does not work well out of the box, that's how it's going to be forever.
Community support is more important than anything else for routers, the manufacturer can't be bothered to fix anything, they're busy trying to get people to buy newer routers. It's weird that this is the situation, but now you know.
…considering this model's predecessor, the AX-86U has been declared EOL, and won't reach anywhere near the level of support the AC-86U received, even if that was an anomaly.
Also consider that there are parts of the code that Merlin can't, or won't, touch, as well as the fact that the buck ultimately stops with Broadcom, or whomever makes the SoC.
Once they drop support for the hardware architecture, there's nothing Asus can do about it, and that's probably why the AX-86U (non-Pro) has met a premature demise that is sooner than one might expect from Asus.
Yeah, Asus is still probably a better bet than the other brands as far as consumer-grade networking hardware goes, but there are still bugs that go unfixed, even stupid cosmetic bugs, and functions that previously worked well in earlier generations have become flaky, and untrustworthy. Like the USB drive support, to name one.
Users who buy these routers and don't count on using them for anything but basic wireless access may never encounter any noticeable issues, but start to dig into the other more esoteric configurations, or extra features that one presumably pays the premium to have, and utilize?
Don't be surprised if there are bumps in the road, that don't get smoothed out by either Asus or the third-party forks, if available. The risks posed by other brands might not be as high with Asus, but they are still there.
Just a reality check.
(AX 68U, AC68/86U are on the EOL list)

You're making an argument for the limitations of the fan support, or how big / small you perceive them to be, but they don't exist much at all for the other routers, so this is still the better option. The AX86u is about 2x as fast close range, 1.5x as fast long range vs the Legendary AC86u, and it's got a decent fan base @ merlin. Arguably faster wifi than most people will ever need.
What other models of routers would you recommend?
