That's what I do, it's called "The Scary Sharp" method of sharpening. I use 1000 grit.

These are junks. I got several of them even the Wahl brand and they won't cut or get dull really quick. I bought this brand years ago and it still cut so well. I bought another one for myself to do my own hair cut.

Eventually you will have to replace the blade, provided the thing lasts that long.
I have a Wahl from 2000 that still works (had a cord short I had to fix) and it definitely needed another blade in that time. I've cut my hair with it the whole time.... how much is 24 years of haircuts? lol

I bought a pair of Wahl clippers for $20 in high school ~2004-2005 when my mom told me I had to start paying for my own stuff (including haircuts). They were starting to catch a little, and I'm sure it was time to replace or sharpen the blades after 18 years of haircuts (~150 cuts at the rate I cut my hair).

I ended up just replacing the cliipers though since I had dropped mine (the handle was cracked and made a loud buzzing sound. Didn't affect performance). I was able to snag the Wahl Pro Elite for $30. I forsee these lasting longer than the last.

It blows my mind that some guys spend as much or more on a single haircut than I've spent my entire life on haircuts.

Well, back in the day there was something to be said about being pampered. Especially when you were pampered by some good looking girls in hair school. I did that a lot and dated one of them. If it's just about the haircut, it's actually more convenient to take these out and do it at any time without taking the time out. Going to a salon etc was always about the pampering or what you could call ASMR.

Might as well buy the best quality clipper possible, you'll use it forever. Same thing I tell budding photographers, always buy a Really Expensive tripod, you'll replace the camera but an expensive professional tripod will be there 20 years later.

Is this really a thing? I bought another set but I kept the originals, just couldn't bear throwing a basically good piece of slightly dull steel in the trash.

The wahl's all have that cord short problem for some reason. I had to fix mine as well, and when I posted about it on another forum, a dozen other people said the same thing, lol...I figure I have saved enough to buy a new motorcycle since I started cutting my own hair in 2015.
Just taking a wild guess, but I'd imagine a big part of that shorting problem is just the constant vibration it's under. I can't even remember now exactly what part was shorted on mine.

It's usually the cord up by the unit.
