Get the phone via Walmart

Pay off the phone (either within 3 days to avoid activation or after 14 days)
Cancel the line.
Phone will be automatically unlocked.
S23+ will get one(?) more year of updates I think. But seeing as it is a back up and you may not touch it, I would get the S22+. People poo poo on the S22+ battery life but again, its a back up. I am getting the S22+ for $200 for my work phone.

Make a call to CS. If they say no, try another agent. Alternatively, you can get a Tello SIM on Amazon for $2 and port your number out. It'll cancel your line.
JHC nobody wants a 3 year "contract"

why is it $412? Can you give a breakdown?
not iceberg11 but i'm guessing: $360 for phone + tax + $35 activation (unless cancelled in 3 days) + prorated service for xx days phone was active.

I was able to go to the store and pay cash. it seems like their system is standardized. usually they will ask you to click a link on your phone to allow them to pull up your account and in about 3 clicks they are able to get into the payoff/buyout option and usually it only shows "cash" and then you gotta pay cash, they have no change, so bring exact amount..

I had to go to 2 stores, the first store they were initially going to allow me to pay it off, but the guy was looking for credit/debit option and after a bit of searching through the account info they saw the 2 week thing, they said they cant even do cash which is total BS, I drove to another store and they didnt have any issues at all.

Anyone had this issue?
I got the phone delivered but it's not activated,
Called Verizon and they aren't able to locate that new line on the account, called Walmart and they said I need to go to store, get UPC scanned which will activate it.
(Visited 2 stores and they don't have mobile activation guy :/)

PSA: Your account is "activated" on the day walmart ships the phone, for me was the day before I received it (1 day shipping) so you really only have 48 hours to cancel if you want to waive the activation fee

Phone arrived inactivated....self activation prompts gave errors... Called CSR and they were of no use, 1hr wasted...... tried self activation again and was able to choose a plan...

Chat with CSR found that phone is active on pre-paid and there is no option of financed phones on prepaid.. so have to cancel prepaid--switch to postpaid-- CSR chat is of no help they are just routing in circles (prepaid--postpaid--sales --prepaid)...

will take to store today and if its getting to complicated, will just return phone to walmart..

what a mess !!!!

If you are feeling adventurous, activate the phone "as-is" (on prepaid). Wait 14 days and cancel. Keep the phone outright. Since it was sent to you with a prepaid plan, you would be falling under Walmarts T&Cs.

Of course you risk a possible charge back from Verizon.

I went to verizon store.. they don't see any finance / lease as thats how it got activated on pre-paid... In store rep mentioned that walmart must have messed up something while activating the phone... What is deal with 14day activation time frame ?

Walmart's T&Cs says if you make any changes or cancel your service in the first 14 days, you have to return the device back to Walmart. After 14 days, if you make a change or cancel, it is between you and the service provider. This is so Walmart can collect their commission on the phone (I assume).

In this case, we're not in Verizon's system whatsoever. One rep told me that it is most likley that Walmart did not send the SIM/IMEI to Verizon for them to activate, hence the glitch. So... we have ghosts/phantom phones. Will Walmart charge us? Plausible but maybe unlikely since the phone cost was a payment plan through Verizon. Will Verizon find out and charge us? I don't know how seeing as how we don't have an account set up.

Take this with a grain of salt. I've seen stranger things happen but with 100s (1000s?) of daily activations, I would be curious as to what audit process they have in place.

How are you guys able to pay off the device early in couple of days?

I tried calling and corporate store both and they said it can't get paid off for first 30 days (or at least 14)?

I asked them for the cash payment but they said I need to wait at least 30 days.

I am assuming the phone is free when selected prepaid? Same happened to me. Nowhere mentioned about payment for the phone...

Most likely what happened. So this is a deal of the century: free S23 on a Verizon $35 prepaid plan (15GB). Not bad.
