I know it is not a latest gen, but I think this is a good price for brand new one.

Great deal - I'm still rocking the DS216j... these things are pretty great if you have realistic expectations. File backup, security camera video storage, file sharing, local streaming without transcoding... I love mine - and the fact that I'm still getting updates 8 years after original release is a great testament to Synology's support for older generations.
Max drive size is 16TB (x2 for 32TB total).
Personally I wouldn't use the J models. There are many reasons. If you are not familiar, I'd read into it before making a decision.

I had run a ds212j until I got sick of it being slow then upgraded to a ds218j, which is running as strong still. Both are on 24/7 and I've not had a problem (including migration from one to the other) in 12 years. In other words, they do what they do really well. $100 is a steal.

Many reports of people getting higher capacity drives working.

I imagine if you want transcoding you could just use it as a NAS and have a different, more powerful server do the transcoding? I'm asking because I'm planning on building a Plex/jellyfin media server soon and I want it to be able to do 4k
Yup, this. My Plex server is an Intel NUC8.

If you're going to use this model, I would just use it as file storage and run Plex on your computer. To run Plex on a Synology box, you really want the "+" model.

Ah ok. So basically what I was thinking. Use it for basic file storage. Ty!

My biggest concern on this would be the 90 day warranty and secondarily the 2 bay size.

I had a 2 bay system years ago and was always fighting space.(Of course then 4TB drives were cutting edge so....) I moved to a 4 bay and found it much more useful as I was able to store more data with better throughput.

Then a couple years ago I upgraded to a 1019+ so I could run 5 drives with one hot spare and it ran great for a year and half and then one day, it crapped out. I contacted Synology support and after a couple of days of back and forth they ended up sending me a replacement unit. I was able to pop my 14TB drives in and it worked great.(Make sure you put them in the right order!)

For me the deal killer is a 90 day warranty.

I've had this for years now. I primarily needed it for my growing photo storage, and my on-site backup for all my stuff. (2 x 14tb) It's worked great for simplicity and peace of mind. I'm about ready to upgrade to a DS+ model 2-bay because the ram struggles with previews for larger 40-80mb raw photo files. If you're a light user, or getting started, this is a great deal.

Let me ask you guys thinking of buying this: Would you want a smartphone if it had only 500mb ram. Or a laptop with 1/2 gb ram, would you buy a firestick, or other 2024 product with only 1/2 gb ram.
My MAIN PC, and all my other home pc's have 16gb ram, my smartphone has 6gb ram, my IPAD has 3gb ram!

NASCOMPARES which reviews NAS's you might want to look at for NAS in 2024.
The difference with all those other devices is you have interact with the graphical user interface all the time.

If all someone needs is basic network storage, this NAS works fine. Besides, at $110 what do you expect?

I second this. We use them extensively at work, and I wanted one for home, so I bought the 'J' model to save some $. It works, but I kind of regret not saving more and getting a '+' model.

I've got a data point as well. I still have my first NAS, Synology DS410 (it's not Internet facing) .. I think my drives are twice the reported maximum drive size.

My j destroyed disks like a toddler ruins carpet. Plus you can't run a full backup on Synology, only the data but not the apps. If your apps tank, enjoy reinstalling and reconfigure most from scratch - super fun for plex.

These days you can get an N100 micro pc for 160 that tanscodes and is far more versatile, so not really seeing the use case for these anymore.
