Steps I took.
1. Signed up for a google voice number using a junk email.
2. Set up a voicemail PIN and then paid $3 to unlock the number. Follow these instructions: https://slickdeals.net/f/17325810-metro-by-t-mobile-port-in-new-number-offers-select-smartphone-30-days-service-from-40-free-shipping?p=1695
3. Signed up for the $30 plan using an eSIM. https://slickdeals.net/f/17143504-esim-bring-your-number-online-25-metro-by-t-mobile-single-line-phone-plan-unlimited-5g-data
4. After paying for $30 plan, I wasn't able to add the tablet initially. It showed an error saying call in (I didn't). I logged into the account with another browser and then was able to buy the tablet for $20. I'm not able to buy more than 1, the second attempt it errors with "Sorry, you are not eligible to add a new line".
Update: Metro won't allow you to add a second tablet to your shopping cart if the first one is already on order but not activated yet. You'll see a message on the tablet product page saying "Sorry, you are not eligible to add a new line." and the "Add to Cart" button is greyed out. You can activate the first order once you get the shipping notification email (even before you get it). This will allow you to add another tablet to your shopping cart. Use this link and enter your order # to activate the first tablet after it ships. https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/r...s/activate This doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to successfully place the order (see update 2 below), but will allow you to add it to the shopping cart and attempt the order.
Update 2: I see a lot of people reporting that after they add the tablet to the shopping cart and try to place the order, they get message to call into customer service and are unable to complete the order. I saw this post mention the likely causes: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=
Suggestions based on what worked for me.
1. Try incognito mode or private browsing mode on your browser.
2. Disable any browser ad blockers or whole network blockers such as pi-hole. Also try using a VPN such as Windscribe to bypass your network ad blockers.
3. Use a virtual credit card number from Capital One or Citi cards so Metro sees a new credit card. Another benefit is you can close it out after your purchase to avoid any additional charges (even though it's unlikely).
4. If the above doesn't work, trying shipping to a different address like a relative or friend. Use the name of person at that address (since you don't live there). You will get some verification questions about that person, so you will need to know some info about that person such as the height listed on their driver's license, past address history, colleges attended, vehicle ownership history. You'll have to answer 3 questions from one of those categories (maybe a few I missed).
I can confirm this tablet works with the $10 T-Mobile tablet line even though hasn't officially been unlocked.
The original instructions for bypassing the SIM requirement was to hold the tablet in landscape mode, then tap the four corners in sequence of upper left, upper right, lower right, lower left. Repeat. Repeat again. (Twelve taps total.) Then press the volume down button for a moment till the message appears.
Someone later remarked the taps were unnecessary and only the volume down button press was needed. I tried that on two tablets and it worked for both.

If I sign up for the BYOD $30 plan, or get a promo device on a $40 plan (might be worth the extra $10 to get a backup device), is that enough to allow me to order the tablet?
And can I put the SIM in any phone even if it's ordered with a new device? Though I assume that device would have to be activated as well to be unlocked eventually...
Does the BYOD $30 plan require a number port in?
And If I do manage to order the tablet, I have to sign up for a new $20 line for that tablet so that it can be activated and then eventually unlocked?
And if I end up wanting to get more than one tablet, do I need to sign up for separate $20 lines for each? Or can I use the same line again?
Appreciate anyone's input, just not familiar with how the Metro system and these deals work, and my apologies if I missed these details in the thread.
Thanks a lot!
I did the BYOD activating an esim on an iPhone and did not need to port in an existing number. I was given a new Metro number and was able to order the tablet.
Thank for all info. Can you explain, what is 72 hour extension.
I received a tab a9 with the bottom right corner bumped up around the headphone jack but the screen is fine. The bump/dent of the aluminum corner is quite obvious. I guess the UPS delivery person must had thrown my package badly and even the white label seal of the tablet box was broken out of the box.
I saw earlier someone received tablet box with broken seal while the contents inside box were clearly new, and the reason is probably due to UPS delivery, and the tablet was actually shipped sealed and brand new, not because someone cuts the seal. There is no way a tablet with manufacturer date of May 11 and delivered on May 17 would be an used/customer returned unit. I actually tried with a sealed tablet a9+ box with the seal on the bottom. If I shake it suddenly, the gravity/weight of the tablet can actually break the seal and it would look like someone cuts open the seal. The paper seal is too thin/weak to withstand the force from the weight of the tablet if the package falls with some velocity.
I just keep the tablet with dented/bumped corner.
Does anyone know if bestbuy will accept a tablet trade in with dented/bumped corner but everything else is in perfect condition?

I did port in a number, not sure if that mattered, but they said the plan would be more with a new number, so I just ported in an old number from a line I was going to cancel anyways.
Paid that $30 charge, then seemed like I was able to order the tablet online, though the card I used to pay the bill didn't work for the tablet, and they weren't able to get it to work either
They tried changing my plan temporarily, which still didn't help with that card, and then I used a different card myself online, and then the order went through.
Had them switch my plan back, going to try to get another tablet over the next day or so, once the first one ships.
I'm assuming the tablet has to be activated on the new line, and then that should start the clock for unlocking it, and then another line can be added with another tablet, and the lines will cancel automatically if they're not renewed.
Thanks all for the help and good info here!!

How to deactivate the $30 plan for mobile and the $20 plan for the tablet?
How to deactivate the $30 plan for mobile and the $20 plan for the tablet?
Since it's prepaid, just let the plan expire and don't pay it. Auto pay is disabled by default. Don't have any credit card on file with Metro.
I don't know of another place where people are looking for this kind of thing.

The order was placed through an existing account with an established voice line using a new Privacy.com temporary credit card.
Make sure to retain the order confirmation email or at least a copy of the order number. You'll need your order number to check your order status and activate your tablet online.
Use this link to check your order status:
https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/order-status
Note that the ZIP code required is the billing zip code for the *account*, not the billing zip code for the credit card used to pay for the order.
Once your order status changes to "shipped", you'll be able to activate your device using this page, as well.
