If you use fabric softener (hint: you really shouldn't) the sensor can get coated in residue and impede its ability to detect moisture.
It's important to clean it regularly with isopropyl alcohol (no, rubbing alcohol is not the same thing). Let it evaporate fully before starting a load.
Testing if it's working properly can be done by running a load of already dry towels. If it runs like a full cycle, something is wrong.
It's also important that the washer and dryer are leveled properly for both the efficiency of the sensors and longevity of the dampeners.
One last tip: If your dryer requires a dryer hose, disconnecting it and blowing it out with an electric leaf blower should be part of the general maintenance. The lint trap doesn't block everything. On ventless dryers, there's also usually a moisture collector that has to get emptied.
It sounds to me like the comment complaining about 3 hour dry cycles either doesn't empty their lint trap and moisture collector after each load or they installed this poorly.

He's saying that it under-dries, not over-dries

If it tries to run a full cycle, then the moisture sensor is not working properly.
However, this won't work on dryers which also have weight detection, where the reduction in weight from evaporation won't ever get triggered.
Ventless dryers still have vents.
What do you think the lint trap is?
They also have some type of condenser so that the humidity liquefies sooner. If you aren't performing the instructed maintenance on them, of course they aren't going to operate correctly and cycles will take longer.
You really should read up on how heat pump dryers work.
If they actually operated based on your assumptions, of course they would be a bad idea.

The app is a joke. Can't start either unit. It'll send you a notification when it's done though.
Great at what it does, but using it is awful.

Nothing wrong with the vented dryers, but heat pump ventless is just more efficient and gentler on fabrics, and usually more expensive too. It's been available in EU and Asia for a long time.
They dry just as well if you actually take the time to understand and maintain them.
Unfortunately, people just like to make blanket assumptions based on internet anecdotes.
Couple this with the fact that a lot of retailers partner with bad installers and it's a recipe for failure.
If you somehow managed to make it into adulthood without knowing you need to clean the lint trap after each load, you're already off to a really bad start. Clogged lint traps cause hundreds, if not thousands, of fires yearly.
Another thing they don't tell you is that fabric softener can leave a waxy residue on the lint trap, making your dry cycle even less effective. If you insist on using fabric softener, you should be soaking the trap in vinegar or diluted dish soap to break up this residue regularly.

It doesn't dump moisture into the room. Returning to liquid is pretty fast.
