If you are worried about losing your item then you can use it as is and it'll help you find it.
If you are worried about your item being stolen then you will need to remove the speaker and hide it well within the item you are protecting. The item will still alert the thief that there is an air tag traveling with them but they won't be able to find it (since the speaker is removed and you hid it well) so they'll just dump the item somewhere and you can retrieve it.
If you are trying to keep tabs on kids, as long as there are iPhones near them it will ping but if the iphone setup with the air tag is not near by then everyone with iPhones will get an alert that they are getting tracked.
Another function is left behind so if you are worried about leaving an item behind somewhere (purse, backpack, etc) then you can set it up to alert you when you leave the item behind.

This is slightly more than the 4 pack deal that I bought from Walmart. But if you don't need a 4 pack then it's pretty good.

I have better luck with my Tile tracker. I never hear it and it updates decently often. Once in a very long while it will update more often than the air tag.
I tried, cashier scanned it, but it didn't work. Cashier said that it got rejected because it was Apple product.
Eh? It just started this week, but I only saw one at my local store, so the store is OOS 30 mins into the sale. Hopefully they have more in the back. Four pack was also on sale for $85.
It's in my car. And when I drive away it starts beeping if I don't have my iPhone with me.
