I bought 6 of these babies a few weeks back when they were B1G1, arrived quickly, nicely packaged and larger than I expected, probably a 2 cup size root ball. Mine have been in the ground 2 weeks and look like they will all thrive.
Because this is slickdeals, I should point out that a 50% survival rate at $1/ea means you should skip buying pots ( #2 at $1.50 ea + potting soil) unless you intend to buy them over 3+ years.
Either buy 2x on year 1, put the main batch exactly where you want and use a second plot as a "farm", transplanting from "farm" to dead spots at year 2 or buy what you want year 1 and plan on smaller batches year 2/3 to fill in dead spots.
They do not like being transplanted from ground to ground (losing roots) and the growth/health of a 1 year potted vs a 1 year in ground is day and night. For example, my trees potted last year are twice the height and much more side growth than my friend's that plants in the ground. Survival rate does not equal healthy and tall, it means they are alive.
Check out Schaefer Nursery in TN. You can buy 1 year bare roots for $1 each plus shipping. I think minimum order is 50 or 100. I buy a few hundred from Molly every year and split them with friends to share shipping costs. We are zone 5. For best results, I suggest potting in #2 pots with POTTING soil for the first year and watering frequently through the summer. I up pot after the first year to #4 or #5, then add slow release 10-10-10 pellets. I have 98-100% success rate with mine when I put them in the ground (make sure they are not in low or wet ground, they will root rot). My friends that have put them straight in the ground usually get about 50% survival rate. One tried top soil instead of potting soil and only ended up in the 50% rate also. If you order in fall for spring, you can get somewhat larger stock for about 30% more cost. Happy Green Gianting!
If it wasn't clear, she ships them, no need to be in TN.
What's your watering schedule when you plant them in the ground?
Costco in-store in TN had 7gal Thuja (apprx 4-5ft tall) for $35. On weekend they sold out super fast, on weekdays I saw plenty of stock on the floor. Stock number 864105
If you buy several of these and plant them near each other, will they slowly reproduce on their own and new plantings will show up at some point nearby or are they sterile so if you plant 100 of them, you'll only ever have 100 until they start dying off?
This is a very widely sold plant, and you can almost always get a better deal on these at a local nursery, Home Depot, Costco, Lowes etc, and you get to pick your own plants. Shipping one of these by UPS/Fedex probably costs a decent amount so buying locally takes that cost out of the equation.
Might want to search if this tree has the ability to be cloned from cuttings. Pretty sure I read they can be. Much cheaper to set that up and just purchase some root hormone. For those folks who know... otherwise buy it if you want., everyone is different.

Not dead, but not growing.
How is that possible?

Yes, sun. Also, keep weeds/tall grass down around them. The weeds/tall grass will smother small giants and take the nutrients.
I was at Lowes this morning, they had the same tree a little larger and in better shape for $10.95.
Similarly, their Wisteria was more than see the price of my local bougey garden center.

I put those in last year and it's been a disaster. It's like a drug to the deer. I need to pull them out and plant something else.
