Also, there is a hack for the wifi board that makes this compatible with home assistant (the open source, not apple homekit) for Apple, so it becomes locally controllable and readable with no cloud connection.
But if this one comes in faulty you could get a new one 😉

Thanks!
Sorry didn't see this earlier. Being careful since SD frowns on cb mentions (competition). What do bees make? They're affiliated with PayPal. Put two and two together.

10x the noise. Don't do this.
Two units bought new have had no problems for years. Not sure what actually gets addressed during refurbishing process.
I wish Slickdeals would update their mobile app to allow you to tag multiple comments in your reply, but I chose yours in reference to the refurbishment process.
The first commenter is categorically false about WiFi never working, but I suspect a lot of issues people have with connecting smart devices is that they name their 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with the same SSID.
This is obviously a bad idea, as you want all of your smart devices on 2.4Ghz and few setups allow you to choose the frequency.
I have two of these on the latest firmware (1.2.0) connected to a Google Home ecosystem and they work perfectly fine. In fact, Winix has implemented every main control that was available on their app into Google Home, so you only need the app for firmware updates and initial setup.
The only shortcoming I've found is that the WiFi will not automatically reconnect after power loss. You have to tap the WiFi button on the unit to get it to reconnect. They can probably fix this with a firmware update, but it might be intentional.
Onto the refurbishment:
There might be more trivial reasons for the refurbishment, but my guess is that it's mechanical.
The bearings in these are not lubricated well. After about a year of daily use, you'll start to notice the unit develop a bit of a whooshing sound from the bearings being dry.
There's videos on YouTube showing how to open and service the bearings.
I believe they suggest 3-in-1 oil, but I would recommend getting some Super Lube synthetic grease instead and packing it in. Super Lube is electronically safe, so it can also be used to grease the analog sticks on your controller.
I'd recommend testing the unit briefly and then immediately lubricating it properly.
They're sold at Costco.
With Costco's return policy, there could be nothing wrong with them and these are simply going back as open box items.
I speak from experience that maintenance should be performed on them, but these refurbs might be as simple as repacking them with a sealed filter and sending them back out.
