I bought one from Woot about a year ago. It looked new to me and has worked great. No problem with Wi-Fi
Is that sort of like chewy?
Got one last deal and received a defective one. No power. They shipped out a replacement but it was a new one. No refurbished label on the back sign.

Costco is the better deal for this item. $99 on sale there all the time, and you get more filters, plus when it starts making noise in 1-2 years from the VERY COMMON fan ticking issue, you get a new replacement with a smile and zero hassle with the manufacturer's warranty return or short refurb warranty being out. I'd never do a refurb for these.

Also, there is a hack for the wifi board that makes this compatible with home assistant (the open source, not apple homekit) for Apple, so it becomes locally controllable and readable with no cloud connection.
Good to know that there's a hack to control locally! nod

both of my refurbished unit started to whine after about 1 - 1.5 years. Even at lowest fan setting it's audible and annoying.

mmmm filters are 30 and costco runs this all the time for 99 on sale with 2 filters. you're saving $6 on a refurb.

But if this one comes in faulty you could get a new one 😉

How much difference is this comparing to costco C909? I know C909 is $100 more, but for what reason?

I got this a few years ago and the Auto mode was broken. Luckily, I had an Amazon Air Quality Monitor to control it via Alexa routines. Every few weeks, you have to re-link the skill which is a pain. Otherwise, it works great! At least I didn't get fan noise problems that some people have. No issues buying cheap generic filters from Amazon.

If you don't care about aesthetics and the tech features and just want something to filter the air, a corsi-rosenthal box with high MERV filters will cost the same or less to build and will filter a much, much higher volume of air than a retail purifier like this. All you need is a box fan, a few standard 20x20 filters, and some tape.

Thanks!

Sorry didn't see this earlier. Being careful since SD frowns on cb mentions (competition). What do bees make? They're affiliated with PayPal. Put two and two together.

Makes me wonder of all the things that wrong with it given so many are sold as refurbished. Were there that many returns?

I bought four refurbs of a previous model, I think 535. One didn't work right out of the box. A second developed a grating whining noise after a few months of intermittent use.
Two units bought new have had no problems for years. Not sure what actually gets addressed during refurbishing process.

I wish Slickdeals would update their mobile app to allow you to tag multiple comments in your reply, but I chose yours in reference to the refurbishment process.

The first commenter is categorically false about WiFi never working, but I suspect a lot of issues people have with connecting smart devices is that they name their 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz with the same SSID.

This is obviously a bad idea, as you want all of your smart devices on 2.4Ghz and few setups allow you to choose the frequency.

I have two of these on the latest firmware (1.2.0) connected to a Google Home ecosystem and they work perfectly fine. In fact, Winix has implemented every main control that was available on their app into Google Home, so you only need the app for firmware updates and initial setup.

The only shortcoming I've found is that the WiFi will not automatically reconnect after power loss. You have to tap the WiFi button on the unit to get it to reconnect. They can probably fix this with a firmware update, but it might be intentional.

Onto the refurbishment:

There might be more trivial reasons for the refurbishment, but my guess is that it's mechanical.

The bearings in these are not lubricated well. After about a year of daily use, you'll start to notice the unit develop a bit of a whooshing sound from the bearings being dry.

There's videos on YouTube showing how to open and service the bearings.

I believe they suggest 3-in-1 oil, but I would recommend getting some Super Lube synthetic grease instead and packing it in. Super Lube is electronically safe, so it can also be used to grease the analog sticks on your controller.

I'd recommend testing the unit briefly and then immediately lubricating it properly.

They're sold at Costco.

With Costco's return policy, there could be nothing wrong with them and these are simply going back as open box items.

I speak from experience that maintenance should be performed on them, but these refurbs might be as simple as repacking them with a sealed filter and sending them back out.

10x the noise? The only sound is the noise from a standard 20 inch box fan, which you can put on low if you are super sensitive to sounds. I suppose if a normal box fan is too loud for you then yes, it will be annoying
