23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.

Never.

I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!
Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.
Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

Do not do any of these services. There's been constant battles over legislation to protect consumers from insurance companies being able to obtain and use this data against us. Do not put yourselves or family at risk if they finally get their way. Most people can figure out enough of their heritage, you don't need every little detail about from one of these data mining companies

What if you gave fake name and no origin info, so in case of hacks (when and not if), even though your DNA info has been hacked, it's not tied to your name.

Has anyone been successful in doing these tests without real name?

I already did this and regretted it. Any way to permanently delete my data from their database?

Nope, any data provided is never deleted even if you make the request. They say its gone, but only from your view. All i can say is make sure nobody else you know does it or at least they are informed.

I feel like the people advocating are crabs in a bucket. Gotta get buy in to validate their decision.

Pay the extra $1 to get the World Explorer membership. The $39 box only gets you DNA, Origins and Ethnicity.

I'm convinced this is on purpose. All those poor souls that buy the $39 kit that then want to do research will have to cough up much more than $1 to do so.

If one were to buy several of these, do they have a shelf life? I have an adopted cousin that will give these away to people they find in their research in order to get them to take the test.

What extra dollar? Where is this?

Don't trust ANY of these companies to secure this data. Nothing they provide is worth giving up your DNA.

On their sale page. You have three options; $39, $40 and $49. Most people are going to want the $40 option. If you want access to additional resources such as Newspaper.com articles, fo the $49.

For $1, there's really NO reason to do the $39 offer.

In case you thought this deal was too expensive, know this. Ancestry is owned by the Mormon church, which uses it to maintain records so they can baptize you after you die.

So you get the DNA kit, a digital report, and access to the kingdom of heaven, all for the low, low price of $39

So, do we have a bunch of tin foil hat conspiracy theorists in this thread, or is the concern shown regarding compromise/data sharing justified?

Can I give a fake name, say I was adopted, use a friend's address (if required) and burner email for results?

You can use John Doe . Make sure you write down your login credential

Not related to the DNA deal directly, but if you or someone you know is in college with a valid edu email address, you can get a promo code for the World Explorer Student Plan for $4.99 per month for 12 months. I used my daughter's edu email to get the code and applied it to my account. She is out of school in a few months, but the price is locked in for 12 regardless, you have to get another code after 12 months.

FamilySearch is also a great option if you are getting into family tree building, and it is free.

I thought maybe I had German ancestry in my family. I thought maybe I had a half-sister out there somewhere. All I wanted was a connection to something. The process itself was very straightfoward. The results were.... surprising. It turns out I am actually not a white male of european descent, but instead almost entirely African, specifically sub-Saharan. The African people accepted me with open arms. I am now posting from an internet cafe in Bamenda, Cameroon. Bonjour! TU for a sending me on a fantastic life adventure.
