I was also repelled by it my first time, and now it's my favorite of the series.
It's written in an elevated register similar to that of the King James Bible.
It's Tolkien's true writerly voice.
He loved the cadence of sacred, ancient language, and that love permeates the biblical English of the Silmarillion.
if you adjust to its archaic style you'll find the prose riveting, dignified, and even beautiful.
Like the Bible it also telescopes into and out of detail. A synoptic chapter about family lines will be followed by a hero romance, which gives the book an intriguing rhythm.
It also addresses dark adult themes more directly than LOTR, giving Tolkien's world a psychological completeness otherwise missing.

Great price if you're looking to add to a collection. But if you're buying to read, maybe temper your expectations.
You are missing out (and other person who said similar). Try sticking with it and it becomes the most hardcore, action packed Tolkien stories. You do need a good imagination because many stories are much more briefly elaborated than in LOTR. Basically covers about 50-100 as much Middle Earth content in a lot less prose.
I presume that is a joke?
I agree, it can be tough getting past the first 50 pages, but then my brain just clicked with the language and the rest was history. Also a big Tolkien fan and my favorite of his books.
It's not everyone's choice of pipeweed.

I got stuck the first time and didn't come back for almost a decade. After finishing it with the second attempt, it truly is a masterpiece.
""The Silmarillion" by J.R.R. Tolkien is a complex and richly detailed collection of mythopoeic stories, serving as a prelude to "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." It provides a deep history of Middle-earth and its creation. Here's a summary:
Overview
"The Silmarillion" is divided into five parts:
Ainulindalë (The Music of the Ainur)
Valaquenta (Account of the Valar and Maiar)
Quenta Silmarillion (The History of the Silmarils)
Akallabêth (The Downfall of Númenor)
Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
Ainulindalë
The book begins with the creation myth of Middle-earth. Eru Ilúvatar, the supreme deity, creates the Ainur, powerful spiritual beings, who make a great music that shapes the universe. One of the Ainur, Melkor, disrupts the harmony, introducing discord. Despite this, Ilúvatar incorporates Melkor's discord into the world's grand design.
Valaquenta
This section describes the Valar and Maiar, the powerful spirits who enter the world to help shape and guide it. The Valar are akin to gods, and the Maiar are their lesser helpers. Melkor, later known as Morgoth, is the most powerful of the Valar but turns to darkness.
Quenta Silmarillion
This is the main part of the book and recounts the history of the three Silmarils, brilliant jewels created by Fëanor, the greatest of the Elven craftsmen. The Silmarils capture the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, the original sources of light in the world.
Theft of the Silmarils: Morgoth steals the Silmarils and flees to Middle-earth, setting up his stronghold in Angband. This act leads to a series of tragic and epic events.
Fëanor's Oath: Fëanor and his sons swear a terrible oath to recover the Silmarils, leading to much strife and bloodshed among Elves, Men, and other races.
Wars and Tragedies: The Elves wage war against Morgoth, but despite their heroism, they suffer great losses. Key stories include the tales of Beren and Lúthien, Túrin Turambar, and the fall of Gondolin.
The Fall of Morgoth: Eventually, the Valar intervene, and Morgoth is overthrown and cast into the Void. However, the Silmarils are lost—one in the sky, one in the earth, and one in the sea.
Akallabêth
This section tells the story of Númenor, a great island kingdom of Men, blessed with long life. The Númenóreans grow proud and attempt to seize immortality by sailing to the Undying Lands. This leads to their downfall, as Númenor is sunk beneath the sea by Ilúvatar.
Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
The final part briefly covers the events leading to "The Lord of the Rings." Sauron, Morgoth's lieutenant, forges the One Ring to dominate the other Rings of Power given to Elves, Dwarves, and Men. This sets the stage for the wars and events of the Third Age.
Themes
Good vs. Evil: The perpetual struggle between light and darkness, embodied by the conflicts involving Morgoth and later Sauron.
Pride and Fall: The dangers of hubris, as seen in the tales of Fëanor and the Númenóreans.
Fate and Free Will: The tension between destiny and individual choices.
"The Silmarillion" provides a grand mythological backdrop to Tolkien's more famous works, enriching the lore and depth of Middle-earth."

Fall apart...poorly printed...it almost sounds like you're talking about taking it out of the shrink wrap. To paraphrase a wise wizard: keep it sealed, keep it safe.
