If you already have a TextNow SIM card but find it no longer works you may need to update your APN settings inside your smartphone. One can use the TextNow support chatbot to get the new APN settings. These settings can also be found online in their support article: https://help.textnow.com/hc/en-us...er-network Once I input the new APN info data worked perfectly on older SIM and sure enough the app is showing my free essentials data because I used the app to activate the SIM several years back. Sweet deal!woot

As an experienced user of Textnow, those considering it should understand:

1) The usage requirement to keep your phone number alive and active seems to vary by area code, yet not specified to the user, although they do send out warning emails. It can vary from once every couple of weeks, to every couple of days. Once you lose your phone number, you can sign up for a new one.

2) Many, if not most of the SMS verification services will not work with Textnow numbers. I'm not going into all the details, but this is not a traditional carrier where your SIM card phone number is governed by the SIM card. In fact while there is a phone number associated to the SIM card, that number isn't usable to the customer. Instead Textnow assigns you another number, which is in effect a voice over IP number that it uses over your wifi connection, or when not present, Textnow's data connection.

3) They are notorious for suddenly cancelling your account if you have any use of a VPN on your phone. Apparently they view this as something non US users do to try to get a free Textnow account from overseas, and so cancel your account, without warning, upon detecting this.

4) The ads that are show on your phone, over time, are becoming more intrusive and more video orientated. Before, I hardly noticed the ads. Now they do bother me.

As such, I don't see this suitable for most people as their main cell number, but instead as something for a second, or backup phone, if you can accept the downsides to this service.
For those looking for onetime SMS verification, companies like SMSPool provide numbers you can rent for 24 hours or longer, that are guaranteed to work with the selected service. I needed one for a Claude Ai account initial setup and rented it for 36 cents.
So you're getting the SIM card AND 1GB of data every month, all for a 1 time $4.99 charge? Do the calls and texts use up the 1GB of data? How long will the 1GB/mo of data last for free?

I'm confused....when I go to sign up, I see nothing about an Free Essentials Plan with 1GB data/mo. Where is a link to that? In the app I downloaded, it goes straight to buying the SIM card. When do I pick the plan?

Where does it say anything about a free 1GB data/mo? Don't see that.

Edit: I found this page which explains the types of apps you can use the 1GB of data with. Apparently, it's NOT data that you can use for just anything you want to:

It's possible that your friend's older Samsung S7 lacks the proper antennas for optimal reception with TextNow's service?

Upgrading to a more recent phone model could improve call quality and reliability.

This could very well be true. One of the bands T-Mobile uses in suburban and rural areas is band 71, which I don't think the S7 has. That could be impacting his reception.

FYI TN uses T-Mobile for connectivity. They used to use Sprint, but they had to switch when T-Mobile shut down the old Sprint network.

Can you please confirm that is still true?
I tested it just now and I can use GV for texting but NOT voice calls either inbound or outbound with the TextNow SIM and importantly NO WiFi.
Thanks.
I updated my post to be more specific, thanks. I haven't attempted to use it with GV voice calls. Text only so far. Will try it out tomorrow.

Had a similar lifetime offer but didn't use every 25 days or whatever and it took my number away. Then got a new number but the SIM card won't work again so it's stuck broken until buying another SIM card i guess. Inconvenient.

Yes, and you'll lose your number if you don't use every 30 days (or something like that). The SIM card coverage has Canada coverage, BTW.

I have an old SIM card from them that I haven't used in 2 years, and it no longer works.
Verify you are using the most recent APN settings. Thought my old SIM was not working. Turns out I needed to input the latest APN settings. The chatbot on their support page will walk you through it. Took me like 2 minutes. My very old TextNow account is showing the free 1GB of 'Essential Data' and the sites listed are indeed working. This is a fantastic deal indeed!

They charge 1.99/week to lock your number, or you can pay 6.99/week to lock your number and remove ads.

Yeah, I think those regular prices are ridiculous, but they sometimes have sales or promotions with reasonable prices. I can't recall exactly when they offer them, but I think it's usually around holidays.

I have been using TextNow for about a year now, since the first "Free TextNow SIM" promo. A few things to note.

1) $5 SIM is their standard price. They fairly often run promos where they sell it for $1 or $2.

2) If you'd like to keep your number without having to worry about keeping it active, and without having to pay for it, simply port in a number (for example from Google voice for $3). That permanently locks it to your account.

3) An effective way to block ads so far has been to use an ad blocking DNS on your phone (there are free ones out there). Most, if not all android phones support it natively in the setting called "Private DNS". The catch is that you have to allow ads when you first sign into the app, but once you've signed in, you can update your DNS settings, and block the ads.

Otherwise, now with some data included, it has been a great free mobile service. I am not sure how they handle the data pertaining to your contacts and call history, but if that's not a concern for you, I'd recommend giving it a try.

Free vs $100 a year is almost the same based on the value of $1 lately...

I second Hello Mobile. $5/month is a steal and it's great as a kids' phone plan.
How fast does the SIM card get delivered for Hello Mobile? Do they FedEx it or does it take a more than a week?

Interesting, I wonder if they got better or you just lucked out. I had 4 lines with their unlimited service last year. Customer service was terrible. Speeds would get throttled for no reason. They couldn't resolve the issue and only had basic troubleshooting. Reset phone, update APN settings, send you a new SIM card. By the way, on the chance you want to replace your sim, it comes activated. Meaning if you still have your sim, service will be cut off until your new SIM arrives. If your sim gets lost in the mail, your number is out there until you get a new SIM or port out.

I've been on plenty of low end carriers with dodgy customer service over the years including FreedomPop. Hello mobile is one of the worst, stay away

Can everyone give them feedback to add Life360 app for free data? Really this will help parents for location tracking during School bus ride or whenever required. This will help a lot for all the parents with kids!
