A new 182x+ is over due. Hopefully a new 1824+ or 1825+ will be announced soon.
I have to commend synology. I bought mine in 2018, and it's still going strong, no issues. Probably the longest running electronic I have at this point (has survived several computer upgrades, a few TV's, microwaves, two mesh router systems, three robot vacuums, and lots of other misc). Maybe electronics are just made poorly these days, but my Synollgy NAS keeps chugging along.
I just wish it had the Intel processors to transcode on Plex better.

I love my Roku and don't want to have to run a separate second computer just for Plex.

Noob question: Why are these NAS enclosures this expensive? If you add up all the hardware.... is it proprietary software? Is this the only company making these? These are honest questions; I know nothing about these devices.

They're not just enclosures, but entire low-power computers. You're mainly paying for the software and support around it. You can build your own NAS with better specs for cheaper, which I have done, but you end up spending a ton of time on DIYing the hardware and software, you don't get as small and nice of a form factor, and the open-source software isn't as nice. I built my NAS a couple years ago and it's really powerful and feature-rich, but I'm going to buy a Synology soon to simplify things.

I LOOOOVE my synology. Most amazing 4K plex server running off of it throughout our house. I stream NFL games OTA in high definition. I rip all my 4K blu rays and play them in HDR to any TV or device in the house in full glorious quality over PLEX. The children watch their favorite Disney movies in 7.1 ATMOS off of it in the living room while my wife backs up her iPhone photos to the synology server and then clears the space on her phone. It has made our lives so much better!

What model are you using ? I am looking one for a basic usage. Basically for family photos and videos backup. Thanks.

Just hit my 1521+ last month.
FWIW, Synology was zero help.
The 1521+ isn't an actual Synology model and the Atom CPUs (2XXX models) with the bug are from the 2015 era. You clearly have a different issue. The 1520+ and 1522+ use Celeron and Ryzen CPUs. The 1515+ and 1517+ models were affected.

Tempted but waiting for Black Friday to update my Drobo. Despite the disaster the company was, my Drobo 5N is still working great going on 8 years and worked as intended through two hard drive failures over the years. Just hot swapped the drive and it began rebuilding itself. I keep it running as a plex media server nearly all of the time. Disassemble it once a year to clean out the dust and what not. However, even though it's not broke yet, I need to be proactive in moving content to a new NAS, because when it goes, there's no support options available to me.

Think of it as, say, $400 for the actual hardware/overhead/shipping/etc. and prepaying $60/year for 10 years of software OS/security updates/tech support. You can still use beyond 10 years, but at your own risk. If you're smart about it or simply don't let it get exposed to the internet at all, it should be ok.

Imho that's way better than ACTUALLY charging a per-year subscription. If Syno ever did that, they'd lose tons of customers.

The hardware isn't mass-produced as much as standard PC parts, so it probably costs a little more than you might think for just the hardware bays and power supply. On the plus side it's engineered specifically for NAS duties and has an idle wattage of something like 25 watts, well below most PCs, especially older-parts PCs. This model has ECC for better stability and anti-corruption from memory errors. If you've ever tried to make your own cheap NAS with old server parts, you'd know how expensive it is to try to get both power efficiency and ECC at the same time. Use old parts? Lose power efficiency. But newer parts cost more.

Btw, if you want a prebuilt, think twice about buying NASes made in China, which does lots of shady hacking of stuff with or without backdoors to hardware. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us...g-critical Companies like UGREEN have to do everything China's government says, if push comes to shove. I recommend sticking to Taiwanese brands ASUS, Synology, QNAP.

I use this exact unit for Plex and I have had zero issues in 2+ years of ownership. The XS series may be "better" and the Intel cpu may be "better" but this unit is utterly amazing. Transconding has not been a problem at all.
I don't think they were suggesting going to the XS model, more like reminiscing that the older models (like my 918+) used Intel chips and could transcode with ease, provided you have a Plex Pass in order to unlock hardware transcoding.

A simple search shows a ton of people having issues with the Ryzen based Synology boxes and transcoding high bitrate 4k video. If you're not having issues, great! But a lot are due to the changeover and it's worth acknowledging.

To go with this deal, here's the unofficial 64GB upgrade which just happens to be on sale:

Have been using it in my DS1821+ for the past two years.

As someone who has done the DIY thing for many years, I mean this in a nice way: if you can't be bothered to search for this info yourself, you aren't cut out to DIY. ESPECIALLY if you prefer video tutorials. There are rough edges in free/open-source NAS software, no tech support to call, and few if any tutorial videos on anything but the most basic topics. If you're lucky someone else has found and solved your problem in user forums.

If you screw things up enough, you can lose data, or open the door to hackers, or any number of issues.

Also you aren't going to save as much money on DIY as you might think, especially in high-energy-costs states like CA, because old server parts are cheap but energy guzzlers, new ones are expensive, and non-server parts don't have ECC and also tend to be energy guzzlers. And in all cases they tend to eat way more energy than you might think, because most PC power supplies were built for higher loads, and become very inefficient at lower loads.

I never said it wasn't worth acknowledging. I do think the Intel ech chamber people make it out to be a bigger issue than it is.

Does this unit take any standard 10gb card? I haven't looked at a NAS in a long time, I'm an old ReadyNAS guy and I was going to switch to Synology but I haven't looked at their product line in like 3 years? This might be the perfect unit for me to jump on a new desktop unit.

Sigh. For the uninitiated, everyone on here who is talking about this "Plex" thing is pretty much speaking in code for [not saying the actual word so it doesn't auto-block my post] "sailing the high seas". You know, an unaffiliated maritime scoundrel with scurvy, but with someone else's media & entertainment products.

These folks use a lot of circular and backwards logic to justify what they're doing, but it all comes down to a simple fact -- it's not legal.
Just curious...how is Plex illegal?
