What do you want to connect with a 10GB connection, I have worked in quite a few environments with servers with more than 10 SSD drives and still only used 2-4 1GB connections bonded together.

The question @komondor is getting at.. is what exactly are you trying to achieve with a 10gbit network? Nothing you mentioned will see any real world improvement.

I linked to a deal for an ssd that is capable of 7GB/s theoretically, lets assume 1-5 real world and sustained, so it will saturate even 10Gb. Am I missing something?

In theory this all sounds good.. but unless you're constantly moving 100s gigs or tbs of data around I'm not sure what the real benefit is. If it's just for fun, then sure, just upgrade your NICs and get a switch but for a 80-100gb linux iso it's just not going to change much.

"Constantly" is a strong word, "occasionally" is more accurate for my use case. But when these occasions happen and I want to move 100GB, on gigabit it'd take ~15min vs 1.5min on 10Gb. So why not, it's only $250.

You did not take into account your bus speed?

PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus speeds have increased significantly with each generation. PCIe 1.0, introduced in 2003, offered 250 MB/s per lane, while PCIe 2.0, in 2007, doubled that to 500 MB/s. PCIe 3.0, released in 2010, further boosted speeds to 1 GB/s per lane, and PCIe 4.0, released in 2017, doubled that again to 2 GB/s per lane

The server I had used 24 SSD drives and it overpowered the cheap RAID controller that HP sent me but it could do 12 drives and we only had 4 1GB connections that were bonded together never had an issue with multiple users running multiple VMs of of the server.

Bah humbug! I suspected pcie3 could bottleneck and listed it in the original post, but forgot to actually research. Thank you!

Well, another line from the op still valid
"I'm guessing 5 would be enough for SSD xfers, but 10 would guaranty no net limiting for now and some futureproofing." Next FS shall have a better pcie.

Wait.
PCIe 3.0 is 1GB/s per lane.
NICs are x4 = 4 GB/s
Plenty of headroom.
