Try and check travel sites early Tuesday mornings at like 6am. My friend told me that's when airlines release their flights. It has worked for me in the past. Flights absolutely go up closer to the holidays. You will find no more expensive tickets than closer to Christmas and Thanksgiving. I would try and book my flight as far in advance as possible.

If you are ever going on a humanitarian or mission trip (working with some kind of a non-profit), don't book your airfare until you've checked a specialty site first like www.missiontravel.org first. They are have contracts with airlines for (oftentimes significantly) lower fares if it qualifies as a humanitarian flight. They can also book air originating from any country, not just the US.

Plane: Should I just hope for a standby flight? But for now flights are, 800+

Train: How much is it usually? I'm thinking of doing amtrack. Ticket to florida christmas break is too expenisive, after christmas is cheaper. $231.00 --

Another site that compares hotel prices from all major booking sites is http://hotels.yourtripto.com/. They also have a section with all sorts of travel deals from sites like expedia, orbitz, etc.
