A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Edge Of Tomorrow - A mixture of Groundhog Day, Matrix, Terminator, on a Normandy Beach invasion setting like Saving Private Ryan. Typical Tom Cruise fare with him the center of attention. Good movie, good story, entertaining parts to make a whole. Perhaps some logical problems iwth the story but what movie doesn't have that? I recommend seeing it if you want a popcorn flick.

Kick Ass 2 - 4.5/5 Who doesn't want to be a superhero after watching this? Can't wait for Kick Ass 3. The M-Fer definitely made the movie, but I did knock off .5pt for that d-bag Jim Carey.

Ender's Game - 3.5/5 Interesting story worth watching.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil - 5/5 When a horror movie is really a comedy, or is it a comedy that's really a horror? Either way it was hilarious.
Awesome movie! My son found this and I thought it was great! He also found John Dies at the End (4/5) which was pretty good too!

Teen flicks for the 2000s!

Just makes me wonder what my parents thought of all our 80s flicks (which I think was the true heyday of teen film!)

"Muscle Shoals"... on Netflix

Well made documentary about the the tiny Alabama town that produced tons of hit records in the 60's and 70's.

Our Idiot Brother 4.5/5 Surprisingly good movie! Cant help but root for the guy in a sea of women....Total chick flick. I added extra .5 point for T.J Miller and Christopher Evan Welch (RIP) from HBO's Silicon Valley

Also Odd Thomas 4/5 Had bit of Dead Like Me feel, but it kept my attention. Pieces fit together nicely at end with a twist.

Free HBO weekend:

We're the Millers - 4/5 - Pretty funny movie and entertaining. The ending was somewhat predictable but well worth watching.

The Wolverine - 4/5 - Somewhat disappointing but still good. With Wolverine I want action and this movie could have used a little more and slightly less character development.

R.I.P.D. - 4/5 - Considering I heard bad reviews of this movie I wasn't expecting much and was surprised I liked it. I will say Jeff Bridges should not do a Southern accent, this one wasn't as bad as True Grit, but it was bad.

Red 2 - 4/5 - Different from the first one. The first was more of an action movie, this was clearly a comedy with some action. I liked it.

Prisoners - 2.5/5 - Watchable but not great. Jake Gyllenhaal's character has to be the worst (Dirty Harry wannabe) cop ever.

The Counselor - 3.5/5 - The first half was really good, but the last half dragged a bit and lost me a little. The mastermind of the [spoiler]heist[/heist] was easily predictable.

Fast & Furious 6 - 4/5 - Good movie. This would be a great ending to the series as it wrapped up things very nicely and especially considering the death of Paul Walker, but unfortunately they are making a 7th movie. Nono The biggest complaint I had was the final chase scene. Confused

along with most of those from the DishNetwork free HBO/Cinemax weekend, I also watched Pacific Rim.

while making it a tad difficult to watch with Charlie Hunnam's character doing a lot of the commentating reminding me too much of his attachment to his Jax character on SoA, I give it a 3.5/5.

Devil's Due, I should have learned not to let my waifu choose any more movies.
Nothing more than the basic pregnant with the antichrist movie with a few "jump" scares.
Also uses the god awful found footage and security camera style.
1/5 at most.

Is this based on the Odd Thomas series of books?

Was that on during the free preview? That was THE ONE MOVIE I wanted to see during the free weekend and was disappointed I didn't see it listed.
Guess I'll have to wait til it hits Cinemax at the end of the month.

I believe so...I have not read the books, there was some discussion about the books/movie earlier in this thread.

Just watched Grown Ups 2.
Not bad for what it is an Adam Sandler movie with lowbrow jokes,
What surprised me most is the amount of decent talent that agreed to join the cast.
2/5

Yes but it's not based on the first book, so if you don't want spoilers, read the books first.

Read them. The first was the one I least liked.
