A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

Godzilla (2014)
I really liked it. I'm sure there are a million flaws for anyone taking it too seriously, but it was a great popcorn flick. Also, love it or hate it, how good is Bryan Cranston? The man can act!

Lone Ranger - 2/5 - This was one of the top box office bombs of last year, so I wasn't expecting much. It certainly wasn't the worst movie of last year though (Man of Steel). I don't like movies that rewrite origin stories like this movie did and they really could have left out the Tonto telling the story gimmick. The acting was kind of weak with the exception of Johnny Depp, who did his best with the steaming pile of a script. The action in the last 30 minutes was clearly the best part of the movie, the rest was kind of boring.

Star Trek: Into Darkness - 1/5 - Once again JJ Abrams rapes the Star Trek franchise. Not counting this movie and the last one as being part of true Star Trek canon, it wasn't bad and was actually better than the last movie. They tried a couple token references to the original series that really weren't correct. There was a Tribble in sick bay and McCoy mentions a Gorn, but neither of these species had been discovered by Starfleet yet. They were discovered during the "5 year mission" of the original series.

Draft Day
I was surprised I enjoyed this much more than expected. Basically a huge commercial for the NFL, but the storyline kept me interested for the whole movie. Did not know it was directed by Ivan Reitman!

Tutu Much - documentary about young girls trying to get into a program. Poorly made. I got several girls confused and they didn't follow them all equally.

Kramer vs. Kramer - yes it stood the test of time. Not as vicious as I remembered. Was unaware what Hoffman was going through IRL and that he was upset with Streep. Gosh he was gorgeous!

Delivery Man - An ok movie but misses as a comedy and a drama. The plot seem plausible enough.

The Curse Of Chucky - A most see for an fan of Chucky bringing him back to his killer roots and dropping the comedy aspects that turned the series into garbage.

Has anyone watched They Came Together with Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd? Wondering how that is. TIA Tvhappy

Last movie I saw was Let's Be Cops because we had free movie cash that was expiring that day - it was a lot funnier than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much! I also rewatched The Internship which I liked better the second time, just might've been my mood!

Quote from J03 :
6 was the best one yet. They had already taped 3/4 of 7 before he died and were already starting on 8 I believe so you can expect at least 8 IMO. I thought I heard they wanted to go as far as 9 at one point...

As far as movies I've seen recently:

22 Jump Street was hilarious. It is easily one of the best sequels ever. I'm not so sure I would put it higher than 21 Jump Street but it's as close as a sequel can get for sure. Many consider it funnier so to each his own. 9/10

i frankenstein. I made the mistake of spending 38 cents on this movie at redbox. I was just standing there and didn't feel like researching the movies so I just went with it partially due to the 3D aspect. What a horrendous movie. 1/10 and that's only because some of the 3d was ok.
I think 5 was the best one. I LOVE the series (except for Tokyo Drift)... I thought 6 was a little bit hard to believe... But still fun!

I have 22 Jump Street in "queue" as well as the latest Captain America. Watched X-Men: Days of Future Past yesterday and enjoyed it!

Re-watched Good Morning Vietnam and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, both are available on Netflix, still love both of them.

Caught some movies during the Epix free preview last weekend:

Anchorman 2 - 0.5/5 - The first movie was pretty good, this one was just dumb. A couple chuckles, that's it, and the ending was stupid.

Pain & Gain - 4/5 - Based on a true story and it was definitely one of those stories you just can't make up.

Carrie (2013) - 5/5 - One of the few cases where a remake is as good, if not better, than the original. Of course better technology means better special effects, so that was a plus. It was really one time in a movie when a cell phone video being uploaded to youtube added to the story.

World War Z - 3.5/5 - Not bad, but it could have been better. I knew before watching the movie that it didn't follow the book (the only book I've actually read since High School, btw). Would like to have seen 2 key scenes from the book put on film and they could have still used the same storyline.

Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire - 1/5 - First off, I've not read any of the books and I didn't think the first movie was very good either. This movie was boring as crap. I did like the white P90 & F2000 rifles the soldiers carried, they looked good in that color.

Jackass presents: Bad Grandpa - 3/5 - Funny, but not as funny as I'd hoped.

The Wolf of Wall Street - 4.5/5 - I didn't think this would really be a movie I'd like, but I did enjoy it. The gratuitous nudity and sex didn't hurt. yummy The movie had a similar vibe of "Wall Street" & "Boiler Room". I was a little disappointed at the ending because they didn't go into what happened to the other characters.

All Is Lost - Really interesting movie, if you're not familiar with it, there's no dialog so you'll need to watch it when you can focus on the movie. It's on Netflix instant watch at the moment. 4/5
