Photography thread - for Schoob

10,796 659 July 8, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Schoob asked for people to post their photography in a thread.

I'm not a pro, but I take some good photos and I have a sincere passion for photography. Soon, I hope to learn more and take some great photos.

Since Schoob wants to see a thread about photography, here are some good ones that I took of Luray Caverns last weekend.

As you can imagine, it's tough to get good photos in a cave, but this is my favorite view of Dream Lake inside the caverns:

Here's the formation that I think looks like a little resting sherpa carrying his pack. Or, if you look at the back of the formation, it kind of looks like Vlad Dracul.

This is my favorite picture that I took of the Wishing Well:

Here's one of the ceiling of one of the caves:

And one of some contrasting stone:

A Northwestern Salamander, which can grow up to 9" long. This guy looked to be about 4.5" to 5" long.

Awww... kinda cute in a squshy ugly kind of way. laugh out loud

j/k I remember back to my high school days (and yes they had regular high schools back then...heh and when high school had a double meaning..nm) I accidentally ran over a salamander with a Chevy truck ( Stick Out Tongue my dad thought that would slow me down after a few speeding/drag racing tickets)... I felt so badly that I picked it up and took it to the local vet.

They looked it over and said it was ok, but to release it in a grassy area near where I found it so it could find its home...said they are just naturally kind of squishy and was probably ok.

*Or they knew I squished all of it's insides and there was nothing to be done but they din't want to tell me Scratchhead

I took some video of the lightning from our storm last week (from 5 to 30 seconds long, no point in watching the 30 second one past around ~12 seconds though)

I just snapped these pictures of our blooming lily trees. As a self-proclaimed novice, I only clicked the button on the camera. The beauty comes from nature. Anything else I should have done for a better photo? It's a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.

A juvenile male Pileated Woodpecker, hanging out waiting for the parent to return with more food. As he matures, the orange crest and side mark (behind the bill) will turn bright red. Not bad for a photo taken through the window. They're too spooky won't let me get close enough for a pic when I'm out in the yard.

Nice Thumbup

This brings to mind a funny story.

My brother got into birding as he loves to camp...getting away from people and just enjoying nature.

There's a place in MI where hikers like to go and some people mentioned seeing the Pileated woodpecker and he mentioned how much he wanted to see one. But as you mention they are very skittish so even though you could sometimes hear their call in the woods it was almost impossible to catch a glimpse.

So my sister and I *knowing we were all going to be camping in that area together later that summer* decided to prep for a prank.

I went online and found a stuffed one that had the sound track embedded with their call.

We brought it with us and set it in on a limb near the campsite and pressed the button for its call... only to realize that my brother's hearing isn't what it used to be Stick Out Tongue

So it took a few attempts to get him to hear it...and then watched as he searched around for the sound.
He got his hopes up at hearing one so close...only to find the toy.

Hmm we haven't been invited back to go camping since then... must be a coincidence.

* Yeah long story that wasn't all that funny after all Stick Out Tongue
laugh out loud
