Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

I haven't done Staples rewards for a few years because last time I did them, my rewards were stolen. I'm concerened if I turn in toner cartridges, they might get stolen again. Since I don't have a staples real close to me and would have to drive 9 miles away to find one, I was wondered if they ever fixed their system to make it more secure. I don't want to go to all this trouble only to have my rewards stolen.

thanks for any advice.
No one has reported any stolen rewards since they changed the system, so you can safely recycle again.

I've bought checks once or twice from ebay before I realized they were stolen (they might not have been I honestly don't know). I haven't bought a check but do get periodic emails from the sellers who I bought from in the past.

Here is one I got a few days ago:

Quote :
Staples Rewards Checks (I do not sell any coupons)

Guaranteed for 2 weeks or till expiration whichever is sooner.

$20s exp 01/31/13 @ $12 NOT combinable with other $20s or $40 or 16 digit coupons

$40s exp 01/31/13 @ $25 NOT combinable with other $20s or $40 or 16 digit coupons

Sorry no $60s at this time.
So if checks aren't being stolen how are these people still selling them?

I'm premiere so I get $40/month to spend at staples after recycling ink cartridges but telling people that the problem is completely gone (not saying that it isn't) might not be true.

I expect there are some with a great many rewards accounts who are selling their ink rewards. Buy ink carts very cheap, recycle ink, get rewards, sell rewards.

Looks like my account has been compromised. I received an email from staples rewards site sending me a welcome to staples rewards message. I cant log in or change my password or anything. I'm stuck at work and can't do anything about it until tomorrow.

Just realized my rewards got stolen and were redeemed at stores I have visited before. I'm going to contact staples now.

Just called staples reward and talked to YC, who told me that he deactivated my old account and made a new account, and told me to call back after one week to see what they can do about the reward coupon.

I asked why I have to wait so long, he said it takes time to activate the new account.

This is troublesome.

Yes. No idea how it happened. The strange thing is that the coupons were redeemed at the two stores close to me and I visited before.
The first purchase included spring water and foam board. The second purchase again included the same spring water and a hp ink cartridge.

Did you ever reserve an item online? There is an email associated with reserving an item.

Its a bit weird. For me, they are mailing rewards in addition to posting them online. IDK why. I checked profile, and it says electronic delivery. Most likely, USPS put them in the wrong mail box, and some lucky person bought stuff with it.

That sounds very plausible. No need to know an email address and/or password and would account for why the rewards were used at stores close to the poster of the stolen rewards. Works for me.

That lucky person is also dishonest and aware that Staples Rewards are valuable.

No I have never reserved an item online. What does this have to do with the stolen reward?

Yes. So I think it's unlikely that my account was hacked online, but it could be that the local staples have some problems. But I have no idea what the problems could be.

Could it be someone hacked into the local staples computer system, or could it be some local staples employee hacked into my account?
