what a tragedy. a little OT, but I think there should be a mandatory minimum age requirement for kids having cell phones. I didn't get my first cell phone till i was 19 (yes, considered very old nowadays), but kids as young as her (13) shouldn't have a cell phone period! kids nowadays with cell phones are just asking for trouble and wasting time and money. all they do is text all day.

IMO, kids should ONLY be given phones with prepaid minutes that can be used ONLY in emergencies. UNTIL the kid has shown he/she is responsible enough and has a job that can pay for the cell phone bill, then I think that person can have a cell phone...that's just my POV and how I will treat my kid(s) regarding cell phones.

I think the majority of problems would be stopped if kids got a cell phone without a camera and/or had the data plan disabled.

That's what I did when I first got phones for my kids. They didn't have cameras, couldn't text, and no internet. They hated me for it but I think I made the right choice.

When they got older, I added the camera and text. But still no internet.

I think parents should take responsibility and PARENT their children and not require others to do it for them.

Technology is not the problem.

The problem is our childrens' lack of empathy.

Simple.....for all the kids who bullied her and had her naked breast picture on their computer or cell phone, arrest them on child pornography charges. If that was a grown man with that picture in his possession, charges would be filed ASAP.

Then, the girl's parents can sue the kids (and their parents) in civil court for violating her civil rights and for harassment.

And, the school can expel those kids too. Sorry, but I have NO sympathy for those stupid kids who bullied this girl.

Sure, I believe that too. However, laws should be enacted to punish the kids who bully other kids. This problem shouldn't go unnoticed anymore. It's time for the adults to act.

You're exactly right, the government should tell parents how to raise their kids.

Thirteen year old girls have been calling each other sluts and killing themselves for generations. I believe kids being in constant contact is a great thing, it will prepare them for the professional world. I don't know anyone who isn't always responsive to emails via smartphone.

Don't paint all kids with the same brush.

Blaming the cell phone and/or access to a cell phone is like blaming the car when someone runs a red light and kills a pedestrian.

(and where is, get off my lawn?)

They are teens, they will find a way around it. Webcams, scanning photos in... and what about the little jerk that forwarded the picture in question?

Iagree This. And parenting, for the girl, her boyfriend and the bullies. Yes the mother says the girl was taught about what is appropriate but sadly it wasn't a lesson taken to heart. Poor girl, but one mistake isn't worth the end of her life.

Iagree I can't even comprehend the level of bullying that goes on these days. I got bullied when I was a kid... I was teased, called names got in a fight or two once in a great while... but not this horrible never ending harassment that goes on these days. All day every day this girl was harassed? She had to have a wall of friends around her to keep from getting physically abused?

What is going on with kids these days that this sort of behavior seems acceptable to them? What kind of person thinks that treating someone, even someone you don't like, in such a manner is ok? I can't wrap my brain around it.

I couldn't disagree with this more. I don't think legislation and lawsuits are the solution to this problem. The solution to this problem is for the parents of the bullies to tell their kids that this sort of behavior is completely unacceptable for a human being and that if it continues they will ship their kids off to military school / ground them for an indefinite period of time / whatever it takes to drill into their kids head that treating other human beings this way will not be tolerated. Parents need to start manning up and punishing their kids when they behave like little monsters. Then maybe their kids would grow up to have morals and understand that there are consequences to their actions.
