mysterious "bruising" - Limited OT

5,257 3,968 October 30, 2010 at 10:50 AM
over the last 2 weeks i've developed many "bruises" and i have no idea where they came from. i haven't taken any falls, bumped into anything...nothing like that. what is weird is that you can't actually tell there's a bruise there - there is no discoloration of the skin. but when i touch that spot it hurts like it is a bruise.

there are "bruises" on one of my calves, both my knees, my left hip, my left butt cheek, my right upper arm, part of my right shoulder (on my back) and one or two places on my right breast. Ermm

it's very weird, and it's actually really bothering me. i've got all sorts of weird ailments running through my head right now. i promise that i have not taken a fall or a random roll down a big hill lately. this whole thing started about two weeks ago with my knees and has just gone from there.

diagnose me Lounge.

Vitamin deficiencies.

As CQ1 said, it may be anemia due to a lack of iron. Do you eat a lot of read meat, dark leafy vegetables, etc?
I just asked my husband what anemia was, and after he explained a few things, I'm going to say that sounds likely. He says it makes you weak, and that makes sense too.

So should I diagnose myself (because I know I rarely eat red meat and that's likely what this is) or should I still see my PCP?

Why do you say that? You mentioned red meat and green leafy veggies. That's something I don't eat much of.

And how do you "fix" anemia? Do you have to take supplements, or just force yourself to eat more of the iron-rich foods?

Anemia doesn't cause bruising but it can be an effect of bruising.

Although there are many kinda of anemia the generic term "anemia" usually means a red cell deficiency. The first line treatment is almost universally iron until the underlying cause is determined.

Bruising is can be related to platelets or anticoagulant usage if its atraumatic.

If you are worried, see a doctor. There are many simple lab tests than can give you more information.

See your PCP. It could be vitamin deficiencies or something else.
The doc might want to put you on supplements while you build up with your own iron rich foods or iyou might need a different course of action.

I would rather be safe than sorry. Just my 3 cents.

I will point out that after one of my surgeries that was likely to cause mush bruising the doctor told me to drink lots of papaya juice (and barring that..pineapple juice). He had me drink a big can ...I think they are like 40 oz or something..a day for like 5 days right after.

It helped keep the bruising down. But then you also have to weight that against the sugar content you are ingesting.

I think it's Lupus.

You should probably get a doctor's opinion, though.

You said the bruises don't actually look like bruises, but they hurt. Vitamin deficiency-related bruising is the opposite - it doesn't hurt, but you get the blood spots, iirc.

You could try to take an iron supplement, but I'd suggest going to see your doctor.

I would definitely get it checked out with a doctor. It is probably something small that can be easily fixed and you won't worry Smilie

Jme it could be nerve pain/you can't see it but you can sure feel it. One of many causes could be vitamin B-12 deficiency. Feel better hug

Anemia doesn't cause bruising. But, if someone is anemic, wouldn't they "bruise" easier due to the fact that their blood clotting ability may be limited? So, if you accidentally banged your leg, an anemic person may have a larger bruise than someone who isn't anemic. And, the healthy non-anemic person may not even have a bruise at all that's noticeable.

go see your Dr....if you don't want to wait until sometime next week, go to primacare or similar...it's not much more expensive, depending on your insurance coverage, but it will give you peace of mind

A lot of non-meat eaters that I know experience mysterious bruising.

If you're a carnivore, try a steak or two and see if that helps. Maybe you haven't been getting enough meat in your diet, lately.

If you're not a carnivore, talk to your doc about whether or not that could be causing the issue. My friends have used things like Brewer's Yeast, vitamins, and other foods/supplements to combat the problem.
