OCD Me!

Time to 'fess up...

We all have strange habits/superstitions/compulsions. Give it up--let's hear yours.

Here are a couple of mine. I have a strange distaste for odd numbers. If I can control something and I have a choice between even or odd--for example, my home theater receiver volume displays in digits--I will always choose an even number.

I also "write" phrases with my finger on any surface (the arm of my chair, the car door, my thigh) that I hear on the television, radio, etc. I alternate between cursive and print, and sometimes I try to keep up with whomever I'm copying. For example, if the news is on and the anchor says "a shocking double murder in the District this evening," I will be scribbling this phrase on the couch cushion to my right.

I've also practiced wiping my butt with my left hand in case my right hand gets cut off or mangled in some horrible accident.

Your turn.

Saw a sign "Road Ends 5/10 Mile." Annoyed

How can we expect government to reduce spending when they can't even reduce fractions? Crying

I can't say I have anything that particularly stands out. However the OP mention of odd numbers made me laugh. My dad used to hate odd numbers and always had his temperature in his car set to an even one. I made sure to change it to odd as often as I could remember. Hilarious.

I've already composed and deleted 4 rather lengthy replies to your inquiry, but I can't really bring myself to explaining it in the detail required to accurately and adequately convey why this was a problem...

i'm the same way about temps in my car; you'll never see an odd number on the readout unless it's the passenger zone. now if we're talking about large enough ranges (like a stereo receiver), i go to multiples of five. at home, 25 is normal listening volume, 30 is when i'm eating, and 35 is for sports.
  • i count my steps in fours, trying to get exactly four in front of a bank of windows or sections of sidewalk. but i'm worst on stairs: i can tell you the buildings in town that have the "perfect" number of steps between floors (sixteen).
  • because i left the garage door open all night once several years ago, i now have to open the door to the garage and make sure it's down every night immediately before i go to bed.
  • when i put beverages in my fridge or mini-fridge, i face all their labels out. i have punched someone for rotating a soda can.
  • when i vacuum, i have to do it in overlapping geometric shapes which result in the the whole room having the tallest piling possible. i have climbed over furniture to prevent footprints between vacuumings.
  • in my fairly expansive episode collection, i add the major events of that specific episode to the file name after i watch it.
  • i use formatted lists on internet forums.

I'm presuming that either I don't need to explain it since it's so obvious to those similarly afflicted, or my explanation will lead to even further OCDish rebuttals of why my explanation is less than correct because the "error" isn't precisely an error and might even be "too correct..."and this ain't the Podium...

The 4 minute estimate is impossible without speeding so it shouldn't even be on the sign.

probably. Big Grin

the only thing that gives me comfort is my proclivities don't interfere with my life or relationships. the guy i punched for the soda was in the shoulder and only because he was goading me in front of a group. i don't freak out when people walk across my freshly-vacuumed carpet (i just silently die a little inside). most people don't notice: when i recently told my coworkers about my preference toward the number four, a few said that explained some of the system designs i'd submitted, but they didn't peg me for a neurotic.

that's what i figured, but i'd rather the sign tell me something close to reality as opposed to an estimated time based on a rule nobody follows.

on what are those estimates built, anyway? is someone watching video feeds, are there radar guns checking speeds, are they pre-programmed?

But apparently "i" instead of "I" doesn't bother you?

It doesn't bother me as much as people using a question mark after a statement, rather than a question.
