SO after i select the pick up location to call the uber do i need to do anything else? do i tell the driver directly where i need to go? and how does uber know i have reached my destination so it stops charging?-- i'm guessing the uber driver would do this but not sure if the rider needs to do it too.

You can get fare estimate. Uber knows when you reached destination when driver taps "ride done" on his phone.
