Samsung LCD/Plasma/DLP TV's Capacitor Class Action Settlement Lawsuit

FINALLY, Samsung is offering a Class Action Settlement on a defective capacitor in some TV's. I am sure lots of people in SD community have bought these early LCD/Plasma/DLP model HDTV's from Samsung around 2008. I had "ln52a650a1f" LCD HDTV that died right after 2 year warranty expired. I called Samsung and argued with manger and ended up cussing at him because they wouldn't acknowledge the problem or give any sort of reimbursement. After doing some research, I found out that lots of people are having same problem with Samsung TVs bought around 2008 and the cause was a faulty capacitor bought from Chingmai electronics (basically means Chinese junk Smilie) that's inside these model TV's.

My problem was getting ghost images, dark multiple images that would clear after TV warmed up for 30-45 minutes but it was a pain the "you know where". So, last month I ended up buying LG 3D TV that I absolutely love and vowed to never buy Samsung again wavewave

Here is the link that you need to check your model and take appropriate action:

NO SAMSUNG TV's for me again.

STEP BY STEP Instructions to get $300 Card: HERE

============================================
-----------------------------------

Information for reimbursement of $300 by MadCowDeals.

If you don't own the TV anymore, you don't need proof that you don't own it... you need proof that you ONCE owned it (proof or purchase, or SEA can verify such a purchase) and that you filed a complaint

From Page 8 PART D [samsung.com] here: http://www.samsung.com/us/capacit...Notice.pdf

So if you filed a complaint, and have the proof or purchase, or have called with the serial number, that implies reasonable documentation of ownership. I got MY $300 debit card using this method, per the full class notice.

********************************** SETTLEMENT DETAILS [samsung.com] ***************************
You must fill out and submit this form to obtain reimbursement for:

1) Expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to evaluate or diagnose the capacitor issue covered by the settlement up to $150

2) Expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to fix the capacitor issue covered by the settlement up to $150, or up to $300 if the repair included replacing a power supply board

3) Shipping expenses, including insurance costs, you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012 to fix the capacitor issue covered by the settlement, up to $150

4) A $300 fully transferable debit card if you reported to SEA, prior to March 2, 2012 the capacitor issue covered by the settlement, but did not get it fixed and you now no longer posess your television; or

5) A payment of $50 if, after March 2, 2012, you require more than on repair to fix the capacitor issue covered by the settlement.

>>>In other words, a customer who repaired the set may receive up to $600 for diagnosis, repairs, and shipping, plus $50 if they need more repairs; while a customer who ditched the set can still receive up to $450 for diagnosis and compensation. <<<

If you have any disputes with the Claims Administrator about your claim, you can send the claims administrator a notice of your dispute within 30 days from the date of rejection, along with any supporting documentation. You can request a review of the dispute by the Court. You can also choose to submit the dispute, or any other dispute regarding the terms of the Settlement Agreement, to the Alternative Dispute Resolution Unit of the Division of Consumer Affairs of the State of New Jersey, Office of the Attorney General. I'd the similar issue with my model: LNT4061F. I called samsung and technician replaced capacitors free of cost. He said SamSung is aware of this issue and they are fixing the issue free of cost on Request. I don't see my model mentioned in the Lawsuit.

I'm waiting for a class action suit against LG -- my TV just went "POP" (rather loud) after less than 10,000 hours and all the colors washed out. Many others have mentioned this on other boards but LG refuses to admit they had a problem product. LG is also lame at supporting legacy products that need support such as firmware updates for today's changing specs (like their Blu-ray players).

Good luck to you Samsung owners!

Guys to think that you'll get away from faulty electronics by just switching away from samsung to toshiba, or panasonic will get you away from the ever problematic capacitor problem is, at least in my opinion, somewhat ignorant.
The problem is how Samsung handled it. They continue to deny the sets have a problem, even in the class action settlement. If the company had stepped up, admitted the problem and took steps to help their customers, people wouldn't be so quick to bash them. In this case, Samsung was somewhat ignorant.

I guess I'll check the model number for my DLP, although I doubt it's covered. I bought it from Costco in 2005 and it's been working perfectly for 6 1/2 years.

Just returned my Samsung LN46C630 few days ago for a 55" LG LED 120hz.

The problem with the Samsung was the Panel - so the Bestbuy in-service techie said. This would come nicely as a small compensation...
Doesn't look like that model is covered in this settlement. This appears to be for TVs made over 3 years ago.

Lucky for me, I have one on the list. Looks like if I report my problem and "get rid" of the TV in the next week or so I can collect $300.

Why stop with Sammy TV's?

We've purged every Sammy item in our home and won't consider purchasing another.

BTW our new Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma was a key buy from PCRichard

I completely agree, the MFGs have to take ownership 100% when these problems occur. Dell denied it had problems with capacitors for years in its GX620 line of desktops then they finally stepped up and owned it. Just about any company will try to deny and get around a big payout or recall if they can, some are just quicker to step forward then others

I actually found a link in an amazon review on how to fix this issue. I went to a local electronics store, bought a soldering gun, some new capacitors and fixed the issue myself. Only $35 for the entire fix, along with my time. That was back in 2009. The TV is still running great at my parents house.

I hope something like this happens with Sony. My sony bravia KDL-z5100 is having similar issues listed. There are tons of forums with all sorts of complains about it...

We had bad luck with several Samsung LCD monitors at work. Based on that, I ignore an deals on Samsung. I just assume they will not last.

laugh out loud at all the suckers that pay a premium for Samsung and Sony products that fall apart. If you're gonna buy Chinese electronics you might as well go with a budget brand. ALL companies cut corners and use cheap Chinese parts, so why pay extra for it?
