8TB Drive Support

48 13 March 22, 2018 at 01:33 AM
Hello Everyone -

I have a HTPC I built a while back. It has a Biostar MCP6P motherboard and runs Windows 7 x64. I bought an 8TB drive for it recently, but it doesn't seem to want work. Either I get it's corrupted or only 2TB shows up in Windows. It works fine when its hooked up via USB, so I got to thinking maybe the drive isn't compatible with the board. Is there some way I can figure this out? Thanks for any help.

How are you formatting the drive when it's directly connected? It will need to be GPT not MBR. Does the motherboard have an updated bios?

+1 on GPT as soon as I read the OP saying ...only 2TB shows up...

Thanks for the replies. I believe the latest BIOS update is from 2010. That's right before I built it. I had it in the external case, where it works normally, but I'd like to put it back in the case. Not this time, but I've had it set to GPT before and it did not fix the problem. That's why I started to think perhaps the board doesn't support 8TB drives being it's so old. Thanks again.

Google around that chipset and hard drive limit. It does sound like it may be limited but a few people have work arounds. You are looking at a MB thats 8+ years old and that's a really long time in the tech world. You might be more efficient to look into upgrading that thing, it's probably fairly power hungry.
