I recently made a trip to Vegas and used the sandwich trick to great effect!laugh out loud

So I was wondering if anybody has any experience using it in any other cities?

I'd like to use it in Boston and New York.Sly

Thanks for the nice tip.
But I used a $30 sandwich even in NYC and got a suite for a single night...lol
Excellent, good for you! Was it a 5 star luxury hotel, cause that's what I was talking about? Though an extra $20-$30 is likely a welcome perk for any poor desk clerk in this economy.

So at the check in of any Vegas hotel, I just hand the clerk a $20 bill? Do I have to try to be discreet and hide it under my cc as I give him? Do I say anything?

Things like this sounds best to be done with a female partner as she can seduce the male clerk Stick Out Tongue
Fold the bill and pass it to him/her between the credit card and ID and say " Are there any complimentary upgrades that I could get?"

EVERYONE does this..so you're not going to get into trouble or anything...nor is it illegal. Vegas operates on tips! So it's perfectly acceptable to do this.

Do your research...and know what kind of upgrades you'd like. You have a much higher chance of getting something good, if it's a weekday..and not for too many nights.

And above all, be polite. Ask nicely. And if it's a special occasion that you're celebrating, say so.

Good luck! ThumbsupThumbsup

If you're going on a weekday...or during the off-season, there's a very small chance that they won't have atleast some sort of upgrade available...

But if there's nothing, or if get some newbie, then chances are that they'll hand it back to you...saying "there's nothing available" or "I'm sorry, we don't do that kind of thing here"

If they say that they don't do that kind of thing there...chances are you've gotten a newbie or someone in a mad mood or something.nod because everyone knows about this.
Heck there are even entire websites dedicated to this.

Like this one- http://www.frontdesktip.com/

Which shows you the success rate of different hotels.

The problem is with this trick is that it only works if the person/CSR behind the counter is aware of it. I'll be ticked off if I hand off a $20 and don't get a room upgrade, and the CSR thinks he's getting tipped big for a mediocre job.

Tried this exact same thing in Vegas once with a $20. Worked like a charm... though our room was only slightly bigger and our tv was upgraded to a fancy plasma that we never touched. I find myself never really spending much time in my hotel room anyway.

I think you guys are onto something with the U.S. Grants...OMG

laugh out loudlaugh out loud I'd be mad too! Though I think that almost everyone knows about it in Vegas..

And the reason why I started this thread was to see if others have had luck using it anywhere else...

How would you react if the CSR pocketed the $20 thinking it was a tip? Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

I'd probably tell him what that $20 was for. laugh out loud

Did you ask for a specific upgrade? Or did you just slip the $20?

Knowing what kind of an upgrade you want, helps.

If I don't get an upgrade of some sort, I ask for change for that twenty dollar bill depending upon how nice the clerk is.

I will say that, generally, being super nice and patient will work wonders. Front desk clerks, especially in super busy hotels, deal with hundreds or thousands of rude jerks every single day. A kind guest will stand out.

I did the $20 trick last time I was in Vegas and it worked VERY well. The clerk gave me eight buffet passes and pretty much our choice of rooms. She actually apologized that she couldn't give me a suite. Really, I was just happy with the buffet passes.

I think it could work...but you'd have to be more vocal about what you're doing.. I think if you just slipped in a $20 between your ID and credit card, they'd probably think you included it by mistake. laugh out loud
