Your thoughts on Bronies/Pegasisters?

Personally, I am sick of adults obsessing over a show made for prepubescent girls. Would like to know what other 'non-fans' think of the phenomenon.

I must say, reading a derailed thread is a tad more fun than creating said derailment.

Mal and Kristin - you guys are dicks. And of course I say that with admiration. But yeah... dicks.

I recently learned about this "movement" and yeah - it's weird. But I think adults collecting dolls is weird. I don't think an adult watching a Disney movie is weird, but the ones who obsess over everything Disney are definitely weird. Furries... I find it hard to believe that anyone who needs to dress up in animal costumes to get off wouldn't fall into the "has a sexual dysfunction" category. And I'm not judging. I'm just saying that it'd be a hard argument to make that this one's nature over nurture, and therefor it fits the dictionary definition of weird.

I'm 35 and play video games. I'm ok if other people find that weird, but an argument can be made that the games I play are developed more for my age range than younger. (younger as in 12, not 25) But in the end, if still ruled as weird, I'll live with that.

And OP, don't think I'm defending you. Collecting dolls to burn so as to freak out a bunch of people (weird or not) is also weird.

What's it called when you say a word over and over and you can't say it right anymore? Right now, it's weird.

I know a bunch of adults who collect dolls (or *ahem* "action figures"); what makes it weirder than commemorative plates, spoons, impressionist paintings, or sculpture?

Not that I'm any authority on un-weirdness. I've got a "Paleontologist Barbie" on the bookshelf in between Stephen Jay Gould and Lynn Margulis.

It's easy to get so caught up in what you're supposed to feel and how you're supposed to act, that I imagine a lot of people lose themselves in the tangle. Some people need a mask to be themselves. Is that a sexual dysfunction or just a means of coping with one? Dunno. I'd be worrying about it all getting hot and itchy and how much the dry cleaning is going to cost.

But I'm prejudiced; as someone who ends up playing dress-up from time to time anyway, the thought of a partner who (occasionally) finds that sort of thing yiffy has some appeal.

I'm fundamentally audience-centric. Whether it's art, music, film, or literature, it's your experience of it that matters, not what the author or artist had in mind. I've got no qualms about a song meaning something entirely different to me than it did to the musician--and I don't care who it was intended for: if I like it, I like it, and if I don't, I don't. If cartoon ponies speak to your heart, great. (Well, as long as they aren't chanting, "kill...kill....")

Seriously, though, sometimes it seems hard to find anything that *is* developed for 17-29 year old males that doesn't involve gunfire. That could be one reason to stray outside of one's designated demographic.

Well, I would say that action figures and dolls are the same thing. I would say that most people (based on no data whatsoever) collect plates or spoons or art or sculptures based on monetary investment, commemorations of where they've been, or appreciation for the deeper meaning and history behind art and sculptures. I still get your meaning, that there are plenty of weird things to collect, so to assign value to one over the other is subjective. But everything, subjective or otherwise, has its outliers, and adults who collect things that are initially meant for children would be on the fringe of the bell curve in my opinion.

Yeah, this one points out that it's just my opinion and there's no case to really be made that furries are "right or wrong." When you put in the perspective of what you do (while not my cup of tea) it seems more "acceptable." So yeah, I take that one back.

This last part I don't disagree with - I am more exercising my right to say that if cartoon ponies speak to your heart, and you happen to be a 40 year old man, I'm gonna think you're weird.

So, I wanted to post an image with the Iron Sheik and "jabronies" but my image search started out useless, and then got weird. Plus, I'm too tired to photoshop one myself. But use your imagination and it'll be hilarious.

It's a very dangerous place!
The way I understand it, I'm to the point now where any warning, for anything, causes an auto 7 day ban.

Say for example, calling someones way of thinking foolish....

I'm imagining some sort of half pony, half bro mutation.
A Centaur like creature, with a fake tan and a too tight shirt...
