When rounding to two decimal places...

What would you round 5.3345 to?

I say 5.33 but someone else says 5.34. The complete answer to the problem changes a good amount for the different values. Anyone know the exact rules to rounding in this situation?

when less than 5 round down. So 5.3345 rounds down to 5.33.

Wait, do you mean you round to six decimal places or you round every number to 6?

Because rounding to 6 decimal places is far too wasteful.

Rounding every number to 6 is brilliant though. I hope it is this one.

In conventional rounding, 0-4 round down while 5-9 round up. The are several other approaches with various advantages. Here's more than you could ever conceivably want to know about rounding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rounding

If you were rounding to three decimal places then you would round the 4 to a 5. But in this case, the 4 remains as is and you would round down to 5.33.

I don't see the point in rounding to 6 decimal places. This is like saying, "The lounge has gone SOOOOOO far down hill." You really only need to say it's gone SOO.6 far down hill.

5.3345

Step 1) 5.335 - 4 gets rounded up to 5 due it's neighboring 5

step 2) 5.34 - 3 gets rounded up to 4 due to it's neighboring 5

Final answer 5.34

How to Round Numbers and Decimals:

Suppose we wanted to round off 838.274. Depending on which place value we're rounding to, the final result can vary significantly.

Round to the nearest hundred (838.274) is 800
Round to the nearest ten (838.274) is 840
Round to the nearest one (838.274) is 838
Round to the nearest tenth (838.274) is 838.3
Round to the nearest hundredth (838.274) is 838.27

He did state when rounding to two decimal places. Two decimal places from 5.3345 would be the decimal place right before the 4. If it were right before the 5, then we would include the 5 in the rounding up process. But since it's not, it's inconsequential. Since 4 is under the halfway point, then you would round down. Final answer should be 5.33 and that concurs with what another user received when plugging it into Excel.
